Re: Nursing mother nutrition advice!!!!!!

Hi adam

My pups are 2 weeks on monday and in the first couple of days mum had diarrhea. (I had been feeding tins of pedegree chum and puppy mix) When my vet came out to check mum and pups he told me to give mum dry puppy food.

She now wolfs this down and has had her normal hard stools ever since. The vet also told me to put a few of the dry biscuits in her bed and if the puppys want to put them in their mouth and play with them they can - this is what they will be weaned on at 3 weeks (soaked in goats milk - lactol)

I have gradually started giving mum some lactol also - had to bring this into her diet slowly to make sure she wasnt tolerant. And she is still happily feeding her ten chunky pups (with the occasional help from me)

Re: Nursing mother nutrition advice!!!!!!

Adam - it sounds like you are making the best out of a difficult situation.

as has been pointed out - the food your mum is feeding is not good quality - I don't know if I would use Orijen - but it is one of the best kibbles on the market and your bitch needs good nutrition.

My breed is slightly bigger than the two you have crossed - but my bitches are on around a kilo a day of Pro Plan plus chicken, beef, oily fish and for the first few days they also have around a litre of Lactol a day.

When I start weaning the pups, they have the same food as mum but I only use the Lactol for a couple of days - and also feed a variety of meats and fish and they also get rice pudding every day.

Feeding is not something you want to skip on with a weaning bitch - try and stay away from the cheaper foods / tinned foods etc - they simply won't give the bitch the nutrition she needs to feed a demanding growing litter - even if the tins did - the quantities you would need on a daily basis would make even Orijen look cheap.
