Is there no way you could borrow the money or even ask the PDSA if they would consider helping you out, even if you pay them back weekly or something ?? It just isnt worth the risk IMO and its going to cost a whole lot more if he does manage to get to her.
I'm not so sure, as casandra has said, it doesn't necessarily render them immediately infertile, nor will it take away the desire to mate with a bitch in season. Also, it could have an adverse reaction on this dog, as he already has behavioural issues, so my preference would be to manage the season issue, get it out of the way and then have her spayed. It's not an easy situation whatever, fingers crossed the OP manages ok with some of the suggestions put forward.

Re: Now I'm worried?

How old is your girl? Has she shown any sign of coming into season yet? The dogs trust will neuter for £30 for certain benefits and will assess if you are on low income or struggling. I would
Suggest getting him neutered it may also help with his aggression issues.

Alternatively I'd get someone with them all the time. A door is not going to stop an Akita getting to a bitch in season they are big strong dogs! I'd either send one of them away or take the time off.

If you can get him Neutered now hope the girl doesn't come
In for 6 weeks and it should be ok you should just be able to separate them with a few doors.

Callia is on a distinguished road
Re: Now I'm worried?

Luckily she isnt in season yet (or thats how I read it ) and with any luck she won't come in for another month or more so, definitely worth getting your boy done soon as possible to prevent any future accidents
I wouldnt be happy to leave home for work every day knowing I had an in season bitch and an entire dog in the house alone with just a door and child gate keeping them apart

....which might not come for some time. My Kite was 15 months before she had one. I'd go for neutering the male now, chances are he will be sterile before she's in full season.

As they are rescues, I'm surprised the rescue allowed you to have an entire female and male together - however, can they not help? either by having one of them go to a foster home for a while or lend you a crate or similar.
Stairgates are useless so I would forget that - do you have locks on your doors that can be locked. And, assuming you have someone come in to them, are they reliable enough (and aware of the dangers) to keep them apart when they are let out?
They both have access to separate areas of the garden.

The reason Kai isn't done (despite me wanting to get him done as soon as we got him) is because he's actually now our room-mate’s dog (Due to him falling completely in love with Kai and my seeing how well they were together. He's quite the closed-off type of guy, and since we've had Kaiser, he actually smiles ), but our room-mate works 12 hours shift nights and wouldn't be able to keep the dogs separated if Kai managed to get to Purdy due to being a heavy sleeper.

I would also suggest you stress to your inlaws that she's pretty much housebound, play with her in their garden under supervision, and that's it, no walks, nothing - keep it simple and minimise all the risks. Her first season will be over before you know it, and in the past. Then get saving up for that spay operation, vets are bloomin expensive aren't they!
We've asked the in-laws and they may take her if their dog (A Dalmatian bitch) doesn't take offence to Purdy for staying there long-term, as she's an old dog and can be very grumpy when it comes to younger dogs. We're going to do a trial run before hand, this weekend They do have an enclosed garden and know the circumstances, so fingers crossed!

They are! The lowest price we've got is £55, which is reasonable, but with the slightly higher bills to pay (insurance needs renewing on the car, grr), it'll have to wait

We were hoping we'd get help from maybe the PDSA or RSPCA as I know they can do it for a donation, etc. Trouble is, the nearest one to us is a good hour and a half away and it'll cost more than the actually op to drive there in my darling little 1968 Beetle...

Bills are a bit high this month, thus preventing us to get her done before her first season). Kaiser is also unneutered. We have a high dog gate to keep them separated during her season, and doors will be in place to keep them in separate parts of the house, so I was feeling pretty okay with everything.

Until my friend told me that if they did happen to get to each other, Kaiser's puppies would kill Purdy, due to Kaiser being a large Akita and Purdy being a Collie cross (She currently stands at 18-19 inches at the withers at 5 months, so I am unsure of if this is small for a Collie cross, as I've never owned breeds as hers).

So of course, now I'm getting paranoid and worried, scared to even think of leaving them in the house together when we go off to work when she's in heat, just in case...

Any thoughts to ease my concern? We don't want puppies (God no! No where to put them and there's too many dogs in rescues as it is!), and I certainly don't want to endanger Purdy, but I'm worried that the gate and doors won't be enough...
As your only in wallsall there is a charity in birmingham called friends of the animals you pay a fixed amount and just take the voucher into your vet and they carry out the op..then all you have to do is pay about £10 for meds.... pops is due her first season soon and obviously vey was intact..it cost me £65 to get him done they was at least half of the normal cost..also it can be cheaper depending on what vet you use.
I was gonna get pops done first because vey was still settling in etc..but what we decided to do has worked out well for us all.
0121 4204201 give them a call they are great! they are great for puppy vacs aswell and you dont have to be on a benefit to use them either

Re: Now I'm worried?

In my experience nothing is enough to keep two dogs apart if they are determined to get to each other and it only takes a few seconds with your eye off the ball so to speak,

I thought I had everything covered, dogs were kept separate at all times, one in the crate the other in a different room, if one was let outside the other would remain inside etc.

One afternoon/evening my girl was outside and my boy inside, my children knew the rules and were all busy watching a DVD so I popped to the loo, by the time I came back down my dogs were tied

One of my kids friends had opened the front door to go out for a smoke - I had only gone for a wee -

Best to keep them in separate crates in separate rooms allowing one out and keeping the other crated until the other comes in and is back in their crate

Hope that helps
