Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

Its normal for stud owners to ask for cash, instead of a pup - each stud owner has different prices, and terms. The forum cant really tell you, each breed will be different aslo - you need to get this sort of information from the owner of the stud.

assuming/hoping both your dog and the stud have been tested, and theres more to the litter than 'just' wanting a litter.

Assuming he is KC registered with no endorsements, Eye screened, Heart tested and MRI scanned with good results and proven, I would think anywhere between £200-£400. Of course it is entirely up to the stud owner though what they choose to charge
Personally I would NEVER offer pick of any litter anyway as my whole reason for breeding a litter is to keep the pick myself

Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

can only re-iterate what's already been said - the stud dog owner sets the price - this sounds like a first time for both of you with maiden dogs

For a first time stud, I wouldn't charge a fee until the bitch is confirmed in whelp, at which point I would also hand the paperwork over.

I do however feel deeper concerns here - have both parents had the recommended health tests for CKC? the breed has serious health problems which must be tested for before breeding - they should both have clear eye certificates, heart testing for mitral valve dysplasia and I believe an MRI scan for re Syringomyelia - hopefully someone in the breed will see the thread and be able to advise further.

How much experience does either you have of mating, whelping and raising a litter? how much research have you done? have you assisted in whelpings or matings?

Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

How old is she? The tests for the breed should be done at 2 and then annually for hearts, 2 and a half for SM, and eyes shoud be screened annually before breeding. The tests should be done by a certified cardiologist and opthalmologist, and MRI's are only performed at certain practices through the UK. None of them are cheap, I'm afraid.

There are a lot of people out there breeding without testing, and producing potentially unfit dogs, why not just enjoy her as a loving companion?

If you are going to go into breeding this beautiful breed which I adore, please please research very carefully to see if your little girl is suitable for breeding. and get as much advice as you can before choosing a stud. Find a mentor...join a club or two, go to shows for a lookie - see how she compares.

But whatever you do don't go into it lightly, there are so many health issues that can tragically blight and cut short these little dogs' lives

I will declare an interest - I am hopefully having a litter from my CKCS - planned for over 4 years, even though she's 3 and a half - and I have spent an absolute fortune on the tests - twice over, as she didn't catch last time and was late coming into season. That meant they had to be repeated at another cost. Even if she has a litter of 4 I will barely break even. If she doesn't catch this time it may be all for nothing, especially if she's late next time.

Reading that even I am wondering why I'm doing it but I am committed to my next pup being home bred with every precaution taken for their health (including my girls and their siblings).

I'm going to be a bore as well and mention the newly available DNA tests (one time necessary only) for Episodic Falling and Dry-Eye Curly Coat as evidense shows there is a high enough carrier rate in the breed to start to worry about these as well.

I can only applaud breeders like the one above who are giving it their best go. Cavaliers need more.

If you are a breeder comiing into this breed wanting to do the best by their dogs . . . . thank you.

I had every intention of doing this too, but had so much else going on I hadn't appreciated the test was now available. My Dad was very ill, and subseqently died, with all the practicalities of that and the state I was in I took my eye off that ball. Then she came into season....

I'm still tempted to do it, even though there is a possibility she's already pregnant. Any idea if it will affect the result? I will email them later - thanks for the links btw

Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

any tests should always be carried out PRIOR to pregnancy.... what if your bitch now goes on to have a litter that is affected by Syringomyelia for example.... the new owners of pups that are affected by this could SUE YOU! as this is a condition that can be tested for BEFORE conception. How does this make you feel? to me it makes me feel you are a little irresponsible. You should have waited till results are back. What is the hurry to have mated her on this season?

Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

I would personally consider terminating the pregnancy. Im not sure if you are aware of how serious syringomyelia is but it is awful the dogs are in an awful amount if pain. It IS hereditary. Cavs are a v sickly breed unfortunately. I would terminate get both the bitch and the stud scanned and then reassess.

The costs of a mismate and the tests are going To be way lower than the thousands and thousands you could get sued for and also think of your conscience I am sure you would be devastated if you brought pups into the world affected with SM

Here are some links for some videos on it.
Harveys Syringomyelia symptoms FIT Cavalier king charles - YouTube

Abbey's syringomyelia symptoms - YouTube

Tristan 3 syringomyelia - YouTube

I would hope those videos inform you of the severity of the condition it is heart breaking

Re: Cavalier King Charles - How much to give to male dog owner

I've read this thread twice now and I can't see who you guys are talking to? (missmoomoo and sparkle)

The one with the possibly pregnant bitch (stellabella) says she had all tests bar the one that's a new one she didn't know was available yet. The OP hasn't been back and hasn't mentioned whether her bitch is in pup or not, just how much she should pay for it.
