How long did you research before buying a pup
I'm just starting to take the plunge into researching Rotter breeders to try and find the best match and healthiest lines to suit my household. There is so much to think about and so much to take in to account that I may be being a tad premature
![]() as we wont be in a position to bring on a pup and put into practice my hopes of working the dog for at least 2 years. So, just interested to know really, how long did you put into researching to make sure you found your perfect match in your breed and was all the extra time and leg work worth it? |

Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
Another one here not doing much for the responsible puppy buying way to do things.
I changed my mind from no way to okay, the breed was a foregone conclusion we just knew it had to be a working type English Springer Spaniel and so we found some litters for sale, viewed two and bought a pup from the second litter. We in the 48 hours from deciding to coming home had bought all of what we needed from the internet with 24 hour delivery and it arrived the lunchtime, so as we chose a pup we then decided to bring him home with us as stuff was ready. Whilst this sounds like we rushed into it (which timewise we did), we didnt have to choose a breed, because really there is no other breed we would have had, there has been something special for both of us about springers for years and i am no really a doggy person. I did though speak with vets and doggy friends and trainers in the 48 hours and read extensively. And as you can see from my banner, our second dog arrived 9 months old from the same breeder just four months later and all of this happened in the space of 9 days from asking about puppies for now, to getting a slightly older dog from him 9 days later and 8 months earlier than we expected. Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
Sorry I dont think I explained myself terribly well in my opening post
I've had Rotters for years and currently have 2 rescues. The reason I am starting my research into breeders/lines/health now is that I would really like to work the next one and I need to make sure that the health and temperament is right and I need to feel confident that I am only choosing dogs from a breeder who's ethics I am comfortable with. |

Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
I researched getting a dog, as a whole, for years before I actually got one. I researched Chihuahuas for months and months before getting Phoebe. Phoebe didn't come from a big litter, she was already 5 months when I saw that she needed a home, I knew I wanted a Chihuahua and I started basic research but I just couldn't bear her going to someone else. From the time I went to see her, til the day I picked her up I was researching non-stop. I didn't even stop when I went to Spain with my OH, I read 3 Chihuahua books in that week
![]() Good luck with getting your rottie, I know there's lots of people on here who'd be willing to give you advice if you needed it ![]() |

Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
I did 3 years of research
I was trawling the internet looking at the type of dobe I liked, european lines became my favourite and went from there. I was at the time living in Belgium, but had plans to move back to the UK so researched lines of the type I liked in the UK with health tests, kc reg etc. I got my first dobe (male) aug 6th 2005... I had chosen him 2 weeks previous.... and it all went from there ![]() |

Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
Not long enough, and I was very lucky to happen to find someone doing health tests and using good stud dogs. I've learnt such a lot since then, and realise just how easily I could have ended up with a very poorly pup, and goodness knows what inherited health conditions. I know I bang on a lot about ethical breeding, and having had such a close shave when I first bought Indie, I can see how easy it is to just go out and buy a pup not knowing. I hold my hands up entirely, I should have done more homework before getting Indie, which is one reason I try so hard to help other people find good breeders

Re: How long did you research before buying a pup
With Pongo I did no research and i advise against this. Pongo ws bought as a present for me and i wasnt even aware i was getting him, i thought we were going to look at a fish for my father, brilliant fish he turned out to be tho.
Luckily my partner at the time and my father had gottens me everything i needed. With Penny we decided we wanted a smaller dog. We were not sure what we wanted but saw an advert selling Teagles (beagles crossed jack russells) we researched the two breeds but found so much conflicting advice that we thought sod it lets go get our pup. And we did. She is amazing. |
