Re: HELP! Advice needed
second hand whelping box..NO way the risk of spreading something is just not worth it.
- If funds are tight, the breeding shouldnt have been planned The ethical rasing of a litter is expensive, as is making sure mum is well cared for leading up to whelping, and while raising her puppies. Its normal for a female to make some noise while tied, I doubt its comfy for them - their muscles clamp around the penis, with the penis' base swells inside her. Its normal for them to go off food, and be sick - although if ever concerned a trip to the vets is sensible. - Its good that you have put her on to a puppy food, a good quality puppy food makes that extra bit of difference. I am glad you have booked two weeks off work, but there really should be someone around for 'atleast' two weeks leading up to birth and then until puppies leave. Its not safe or responsible to leave a bitch, and her newly born/young puppies un attended. Its good that you have a 'mentor' although doesnt sound like the correct type of mentor having bred so many different breeds, I am left questioning 'why'. - although her experience may well be needed if you are to find yourself not coping, clueless. Read as much as you can, get the book of the bitch - also read some of the stickes on this section, like whelping equipment and get as much as you can. Leading up to the birth I would contact a vet and have him on standby, incase the labour doesnt go to plan. - also wise to get them and mum checked out after birth.

Re: HELP! Advice needed
Is this thread a wind-up? I do hope so - the OP hasn't been back to view any responses
![]() If it isn't - then if you haven't done so already, I would get her scanned to see if she is definitely in whelp, and then seriously consider if she is, whether there are ways of preventing the litter going full-term - hopefuly some of the more knowledgeable can advise? The mating and the bitch being pregnant are the easy parts - I know all about the guilt of putting a bitch through a litter and seriously questioning whether I did the right thing - and that was with all health-tests done and the funds to cope with any eventualities and the time and resources to raise the litter properly - i.e. ensure they are not left alone for 8 weeks. There is no comparison between a bitch having a difficult labour and the unpleasantries associated with mating and being in whelp - girls can and do die during labour. Judging by how you are feeling - and it might surprise you to know I do understand exactly how you are feeling - I do not want to frighten you even more - but what you are seeing now is the easy part. |

Re: HELP! Advice needed
If she is on day 37 there is still time for the mismate. - But as this was planned I doubt OP will be interested.

Re: HELP! Advice needed
Right I am definately no expert and i'm looking at breeding from my bitch come January. After an awful lot of research and support from my vet. I must say I am not a complete novice as my father use to breed setters so he is helping and supporting me.
I am actually shocked that the person who wrote the orignal thread didn't do their homework a little better ??? Very irresponsible I think, that you don't know whats happening. This worries me that the bitch isn't getting the support and care needed during her pregnancy. Surely some help from the mother in law??? I would definately listen to some of the advice thats being given. Breeding isn't something to be taken lightly and on a whim |
