C-Sections Drawing the line

Where do we Draw the line with Breeders that continue to breed from bitches/lines that are known to have whelping complications.

Is it cruel to continue to breed from a bitch that has already had previous C-Sections and come from non-self whelping bitches?

If my bitch had to for any reason have a C-Section I would seriously consider having her spayed and never breeding from her again, depending on whether or not the problem was likely to happen again.

So why do some Breeders continue to breed even though they know the Dam will never self whelp?

Re: C-Sections Drawing the line

My opinion may not be slightly one sided, as Goldens are usually pretty easy whelpers. However, I wouldn't breed again from a bitch that had needed a c-section, as I would feel it would be too much risk to my bitch.

Wouldn't have her spayd though for that reason, just wouldn't breed again.

Re: C-Sections Drawing the line

why do you think it is cruel? women who have had sections quite often go onto have another baby with a section....I did myself and knew I would have to have them before I was even pregnant so not done as emergency. Why would this be different for a dog? Sorry not saying you are wrong to think this way just wondered what your thoughts are

Isn't it quite a dangerous operation for a dog to have... also they will then have to care for a whole litter of pups while they recover, just think its completely different from humans really

Re: C-Sections Drawing the line

I have a bitch here who had to have a c-section but then went onto be one of the best whelpers that we have had here, so I really think it depends on the circumstances, I took the advice of our excellent scanning lady and mated her again on her following season and have had no problems with her.

I didn't say it was cruel I asked if you thought it was cruel,
I think it depends on what complications there were during whelping as to whether or not I'd breed from the same bitch again, chances are I wouldn't.

big dead puppy stuck in the birth canal, and then lost the rest of the litter when she had the section - very expensive section

Re: C-Sections Drawing the line

I'm replying to this very tentatively as two members on here have launched personal attacks at me, calling me a bully and accusing me of not being an animal lover for daring to voice my opinion. However, I feel I am as entitled as those two to post on here so - in my opinion, I wouldn't breed again from a dog who had had to have a C section. I agree that each situation is different, and from what Tashi has said it's obvious that there can be successful matings after a c-section, but I'd be so worried for my bitch that something could go wrong that I wouldn't dare to risk it.

I think the difference is, women can make an informed choice about whether they wish to have another pregnancy, dogs cannot, so we have to make the best decision we can for them.
