Border Collie eye tests

Our Border Collie bitch was litter tested at 6 weeks old for CEA, and passed, as did all the litter. Should she be eye tested before we breed from her, I note from her reg certificate her sire is uneffected by CEA, CPRA and PLL, should she be tested for all of these. Can these be done ator local vets or is it a more specialist thing.

Re: Border Collie eye tests

Hi Jenny - you will need a specialist vets - not all vets know what they are doing regarding the eye tests
If you need some vets let me know and I can put some up for you.

Where abouts in the country are you?

Re: Border Collie eye tests

Thanks Debbie that would be very helpful, we are in east yorks. I assumed it was a specialist thing as you sometimes get units visiting obedience shows however we do a different sport, we could visit just to get her eyes tested, but the season doesn't start again until April, and then we would have to wait until a unit was scheduled to come.

Re: Border Collie eye tests

Theres one in Preston - Mr Stuart Ellis - Riverbank Veterinary Practice
16/22 WATERY LANE
PRESTON
LANCS
O1772 726745

He comes very highly recommended by many people and is by far the best person in the country for eye testing.
Give them a ring and ask about the tests they are VERY helpful and will explain everything to you.
There is one in West Yorkshire but from what I have heard of him hes a nasty peice of work and people would rather travel to Mr Ellis in Preston.
I know theres one in Newark and somewhere in the North East but I would have to find those out for you if you needed them.
Hope that helps

Eye testing should be annual for those conditions that there is no DNA test for.

Mr Ellis does our eye testing at our club shows.

You can see a full list of eye panelists here: http://www.bva.co.uk/public/chs/EP_LIST_July_2007.doc

This KC page gives links to the eye conditions for each breed of schedules A (affected) and B (under investigation) The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme - The Kennel Club

No problem Jenny - I would by far want to use a vet that comes highly recommended by other dog owners - its such a mine field out there - hope the tests come back good for you

Re: Border Collie eye tests

Is this a pet we're talking about?

I have a 2 1/2 Y/O working sheep dog (Border Collie by any other name), she can hear my commands and spot a wood pigeon to chase at about half a mile!

I won't hesitate to breed from her!

I won't buckle into pressure from the Kennel Club to make ALL border collies CLONES! They are all individual and totally lovable as they are!

AND........ the best herding dogs in the world!
