Considering breeding

I hope I don't get shot down for this I don't believe in breeding just for the sake of it and don't agree with people letting their bitch have a litter so the kids can experience it, the bitch can experience motherhood etc etc.

HOWEVER, I have the most gorgeous little jack russell x chihuahua who is an absolute delight. I have been thinking about a litter from her for years now, but as she is now 6 years old I am running out of time. Is 6 too old for a first (and only) litter? She is only 8 inches high, in perfect health and with a temperament to die for. I have a friend with a tiny chihuahua male who is happy for him to be a daddy. We will keep a puppy and the owner of the male will have one, then we have at least 3 other people who would want a baby (all exceptionally good homes) so I know the babies would all have secure futures. I imagine she would only have 2 or 3 anyway as she's so tiny.

I am not doing this for the money, as none of the puppies will be sold, rather adopted with an agreement that if for whatever reason they could not keep them they would come back to me. As she is due to come into season in the next few weeks I have to make a decision now. What do you guys think?

Any suggestions or advice would be welcome.

Personally I think 6 years is way to old for a first litter,
There is alot of hard work involved with breeding, extra expenses and toy breeds are not particularly good at whelping,
Are you prepared for the fact that could lose your bitch and her puppies, could you hand rear a litter if needs be,feeding every 3 hours DAY & NIGHT.
Can you afford a C-Section out of hours,it's expensive around £800-£1000,plus other expenses....
I wouldn't breed from her,I can't see any valid reason to put a bitch through whelping a first litter at six yrs old.

Gotta agree too, shes your beloved pet, would you really want to put her through it?

If you want another puppy there are plenty around

Re: Considering breeding

I agree, it's not fair on your dog to put her through it at that age. There's way too many cross breeds (and pedigree's for that matter!) in rescue centres at the minute, why would you want to add to that? I used to work at a rescue kennels, and it was heartbreaking, some of the dogs were there 7 years before they found homes (and some unfortunately died in kennels...*healthy dogs were never PTS*) but anyway! I'm going off topic, lol. Sorry. have you a picture of your dog? Be lovely to see her.

Re: Considering breeding

I would say a defonate NO NO especially at her age, toy breeds are best bred earlier than later, you would probably end up with a C section
Also maybe you should read what you posted under the Stud Dog thread

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I disagree with using a kc reg stud dog on an unreg bitch. HOWEVER..... just because a bitch has reg papers doesn't necessarily mean she is a good quality dog. I was at my vet the other day when a german shepherd bitch was walked out with her owner and the nurse carrying a box of puppies. This was a kc reg bitch, her hindquarters were so low she looked deformed and she could hardly walk She also looked like she was lame behind - hips? I don't know what health checks the owners had done before mating her, but I think anyone breeding a dog of inferior quality should be shot. Health wise those puppies don't stand much of a chance
