Speechless! BYB in the making!

Yesterday I went for a meal with the family to celebrate my sister's birthday and we got on the subject of the dogs (as per usual!). My dad commented on how the flowerbeds smell of pee thanks to Scooter weeing up against the taller shrubs; I laughed and said should have thought about that when we picked a male pup out of the litter.

His reply was directed at my mother; "I told you we should have paid an extra £50 for a bitch puppy, then we wouldn't have pee up the shrubs and sheds. And we could have bred her a couple of times and made a bit of money selling the pups"

I was speechless! I'd say he's a sensible man in most respects but that took me by surprise. He actually laughed when I pulled myself together and told him about health tests and how responsible breeders rarely break even with a litter. Didn't even bat an eyelid when I said that his attitude towards breeding led to the deaths of thousands of unwanted dogs each year.

What worries me is that my parents are fairly set on a female Staffie as their next dog. My mum's keen to rescue but my Dad's said he "knows a farmer who breeds his so he can get one of them".
Of course, he's now said wants to breed from this future dog, wherever it comes from!
I told him he must be mad to even consider breeding a Staffie given the amount that die in rescues every day but he wasn't bothered because "this farmer gives his away to good homes so people DO want Staffies".

I know my Mum has more sense than to breed but I can't see her stopping him if he does decide he HAS to have a litter from whichever bitch he ends up with... she's said he mentioned "getting a bitch to breed" a lot before we bought Scooter. He's never bred before and definitely wouldn't consider health testing. Not concerned by the relatively high chances of the breed needing a caesarean nor the possibility of losing both mum AND pups

I'd rather they didn't get another dog when Scooter and Breeze pass away than see him turn into a classic BYB, especially with a breed such as the Staffie It's somewhat lowered my respect for the man, to be frank.

Family, eh? You're not alone, my nan got a cocker spaniel bitch and wanted to breed her because it was her natural birth right, put it this way I don't speak to her anymore and she gave the dog up a year later because she was too much for her

He's barely computer literate (except for flipping ebay...) but I could easily set it as his internet homepage....

Re: Speechless! BYB in the making!

some just dont understand, my family said to me 'so how much are you making' ? I was like 'are you kidding me?' gave them a run-down over the start of the mating (including buyine the cats as a higher price/mating fee/health tests/petrol to stud/paperwork/etc/etc) then from mating to birth, then birth through the 3 months we keep them for

after that they were like 'my good god why do you bother I dont get it?'
so anokther run down of why!!

when people ask about money then now tell them that breeders (good) dont make money due to, and then ramble off the list I gave them!

Maybe take him down to a local resuce? get all the health tests for staffies printed up?
