I guess so - I have to say if I din't show, there's no way I would have entire dogs and bitches together - most likely scenario I would stick to one gender.

I never really set out to own dogs and bitches, but both boys were almost opportunistic purchases from world class breeders that happened to fall into my path from breeding lines I particularly admired.

I have to say I've been very lucky in that my eldest boy only really makes a pain of himself when the girls are ready for mating and providing he is given free roaming of the garden - he's quite happy to potter and sunbathe bless him.

No idea what the baby will be like yet - time will tell - at the moment, just like my older boy - his prime motivator is food - can turn his attention from pretty much anything - so fingers crossed he will be the same

Thankfully - I wasn't on my own this particular day so we were able to separate them before anything happened - but had I been on my own, I am not sure the outcome would have been quite so favourable - a momentary slip with a bitch who we simply did not realise was in season (but of course became obvious with a dog who is not generally regarded as a humper - living with 5 girls, he wouldn't dare ) and the mismate would have been the order of the day without question.

Now both dogs are fully health tested - DOH!!!!! is the order of the day

As I said - sometimes I do doubt just how many accidental matings there are (I've no doubt there are some - my eldest bitch would let the table mate her if it could and cries outside the boys bedroom for the duration of her season - her first mating she wasn't overly keen, the next day she went looking for the dog on her second litter - well nuff said

But generally, it means us bitch and stud dog owners really must be doing something wrong with all the hard work that often goes into a mating

Re: OOOOppps my male dog accidently impregnated my bitch who was to know?!?!?

The only true accident i've seen I think was on here was between a cocker and a springer. My fiance got a surprise litter when he took on a female rottie who after a month surprised puppies on him but that was not his fault she showd no signs of being pregnant and the previous owner's flatmate had a husky x gsd and "forgot" to mention he'd got out

I know my accident was no real accident since it was due to my brother and at that time lodger letting them together while I was away. My fault was though not researching more with vets (well rather finding a better vet early on and not leave it a month or so on before finally finding another vet after the first one told me she couldn't get pregnant in a phantom season ).

Thankfully now Maya is spayed, I never wanted a litter of puppies and I can tell you honestly i'm not sure I want some ever again, I loved 'em but what a nightmare

Accidents do happen but in all honesty i'd say 99% of the times there is no real excuse.

Dont remember that one - but there was a member that had her collie mated to something else - had it scanned, no puppies - was so sure there was none - yet she went on to have 4.

Re: OOOOppps my male dog accidently impregnated my bitch who was to know?!?!?

A friend of mine took her bitch for a mismate jab and was told that there was a good chance she would still have one or two puppies - so what is the point of it if that is true - you will just end up with one or two big pups and far more risk to the bitch.

how long after mating did she have the jab - its true that puppies can still be born after mis mate, and sometimes be deformed - but thats when the jab has been given later on during pregnancy and not when given sooner. Its best to have the jab done a.s.a.p risks are not as high.

I know I would use it if the worst happened and it wasn't a mating I wanted - but I know a friend used it IMMEDIATELY after the mating - and ended up having to have her bitch neutered - losing her bitch line - and the bitch is still having problems as a direct result of the jab

She knows she didn't have an alternative - but it's still very sad then - I know of bitches who have had mismates and gone on to successfully have litters afterwards

when giving early on there is only something like an 8% chance of the bitch going on to have puppies - and there will be risks, but they are lower when given earlier on.

I had Mesalin for my Karma and thats given day 3 and 5 after mating, and also day 7 if not sure - she only had the first two as we knew when it happened. The risk were told to us to be very low of her going on to have a litter or any medical issues.

Sad about your friends girl - I also know someone that had a bad experience with it, she used the Alazin and didnt use it till about 3/4weeks after mating

Re: OOOOppps my male dog accidently impregnated my bitch who was to know?!?!?

Accidental matings do happen as my friend found out she probably could have sold the maltese/papillon crosses for a small fortune but she took her the next day to get mismated. It failed as happens sometimes and she spayed her when she found out she was still pregnant as the babies can be born deformed or have problems due to the mismate. But she wouldn't have risked a 1 year old tiny dog's life for the money. I'm sure it can happen to even the most experienced careful owners/breeders but it's a matter of not letting the pregnancy continue especially if there's a risk to the bitch

Re: OOOOppps my male dog accidently impregnated my bitch who was to know?!?!?

I think alot of pet owners either dont realiese how persistant their pets will be or think they can control them. I couldnt believe how often my Chihuahuas did the deed when I was watching them like a hawk..

Introducing my 'dirty' Sprockers
I'm sure there was more to this story

Yes, happened to a friend of mine. She was waiting on a corgi pup from a breeder but received news that the mum had be scanned to find no pups then a few weeks later the mother gave birth to two pups.

I have also heard a few people come here who've had the mismate and had pups, if anything happened to any bitch I have in the future I know i'd rather go with the mismate than the wait and see.
