I always thought...

That the bitch 'decided' how many pups were in a litter and not the dog?

Saw an advert for a stud dog boasting that he has never had less than 6 pups in a litter but surely he only 'decides' the sex of the pups?

Re: I always thought...

The sperm can only fertilise the amount of eggs released Although weak sperm may fertilise less/few of the released eggs.

I wish the dog could decide the colour of the pups. I have had that many inquiries about having a pup the same colour as Simba I could have sold his litter about 32 times over. Sadly brindle being the dominant colour and Simba having brindle behind him there was not much chance of a pale fawn.

I have someone coming this aftrenoon to see the pups I refused to explain about colour genetics I just said suffice to say Brindle is dominant fawn is the dilute. He understood straight away it is someone I have known since he was small and he was head of science at my sons high school he understood straight away why we had no fawn pups.

Re: I always thought...

Just a sales ploy, isnt it. You see it all the time with mainly new or inexperienced stud owners. Yes the bitch does decide on the amount of pups

Re: I always thought...

It seems to be the sign of a novice stud dog owner who doesn't know enough to be of any help at all to a bitch owner Unfortunately too many bitch owners don't bother to do enough research and fall for this, thinking it's a good enough reason to use the dog

Re: I always thought...

Surely neither bitch nor dog 'decide' on the number of pups. Strong sperm are more likely to fertilise more eggs but the bitch has to produce the eggs in the first place - so given that both are fertile it is the luck of the draw how many eggs are fertilised and how many of those fertilised eggs go on to become full term pups.
