Why not try to find out why these tests or not yet required.

It's because it takes time sometimes for the process to be formalised and agreement between the breed club and KC to store and publish the results.

PRA testing was around for a fair old time in Labs before the results started being published automatically - CNM was surprisingly quick in comparison.

Enquiries have been previously made and ignored. Currently in the UK, there is a program called Protect for Dobermanns, but only dogs 5-9 years of age qualify. There are 5 specialists in the UK.

There have been calls from a select few in the breed for years upon years for more breeders to take up cardio testing. I feel that progress isn't being made quickly enough. If you're breeding (including studding) several litters a year with an average litter size of 8 pups being sold at ~£800 each, purchasing one little holter monitor or paying the couple hundred quid to get each breeding dog tested is still just too much money to spend for the welfare of the breed!

Re: ABS, is it worth joining?

Lots of conflicting comments which I had expected and to an extent I agree with both sides. In theory, the ABS has the makings of a very good scheme and I get the point that being involved, breeders can help to change things

I was very unsure about joining, still am a little however our breed club recommends its breeders to join the scheme and as I may well be on the committee soon, I will do the right thing.

TBH - if you are doing things right, it shouldn't matter either way - I joined about two years ago, I haven't changed the way I do anything as a result (other than issuing paperwork to puppy owners in their folders) - although only had one litter since signing up.

Re: ABS, is it worth joining?

Of the 36 breeders in the ABS for our breed, less than 30% are what I would regard as ethical, responsible breeders.
ABS has a long way to go before I would think of joining.

If you feel like that have you approached the KC, the breed club(s) etc etc and asked for something to be done?

I find that things are not always as they seem with people, one will say another is bad and then when you look the one who does things in a way that you would not feel, in your opinion, was ethical is the one dismissing the others and criticising them
