Hello
I have read this topic with interest and I would like to add a little to the debate about the breeding of Dalmatians.

Dalmatians are an ancient breed and have at some time in the past lost their ability to break down certain proteins. They are therefore prone to forming URATE bladder stones along with many other pedigree breeds that form other types of stones.
If Dalmatians are fed a diet free of a protein called Purine they very rarely go on to develop stones (the condition is similar to Gout in humans). RC Dalmatian 22 is available without prescription and is Purine free I feed this to all of my Dalmatians and have informed all of my puppy owners. Many people feed the BARF diet to Dalmatians and avoid organ and red meats, with great success. Dalmatian breeders need to inform new puppy owners of this health problem and how to avoid it. My puppy owners leave with an explanation of why and how Dalmatians form stones and what to feed them, a list of common foods and their Purine content and what to look for and what action to take if their Dalmatian was to form stones. Work is being done by the UK Dalmatian breed clubs to investigate the Pointer Back cross and its potential benefits to our breed. The British Dalmatian Club and North of England Dalmatian Clubs have lots of information on their websites.
There are many careful Dalmatian breeders out there who absolutely do all they can to assure that any puppies they produce have the best start, so I'm afraid that the public have believed too much of what they have read in the press about Dalmatians and Dalmatian Breeders.
Generally other than hearing problems and bladder stones they are a healthy breed. Dalmatians have structurally remained unchanged for many years and they are free from physical exaggeration. Dalmatians' can run jump and play, breath normally and give birth without cesarian. I'm afraid Dalmatians' notoriety has lead to the press targeting our breed unfairly. Journalists know that by using and eye catching picture of Dalmatians or a Dalmatian headline that they will sell newspapers.
Back to the original topic and post. I'm afraid that this fashion of creating crosses has lead to the creation of "Dalpits" in some parts of the country..........yes, Dalmatians crossed with Pit-Bull Terriers, bred to have the endurance and energy of a Dalmatian coupled with the potential aggression of the Pit-Bull bed purely for fighting....in my eyes an awful, potentially lethal mix.
May I add that like most dog lovers I have nothing against cross breeds or crossing pedigree dogs. I grew up with Heinz varieties which lead to my love of dogs today.
