Need help from a breeder

the original post is here - a question about female dogs - if a mod would kindly close/delete it. Thanks.

Pixie, the dog I kind of rescued, had pups before the age of two. I've never had a female dog before so I have no idea what's normal looking 'down there'. To me it looks like she's prolapsed. Is that possible? It hangs and looks swollen. She finished her season two weeks ago. Obviously she's unspayed. She's a med/large sized bitch. It just looks odd and I wondered if it was normal. She's due to go the vets soon anyway and I would of took her sooner but haven't had the money.

I hope she isn't pregnant. Is that possible if she's had 'a period'? She was used for breeding...

I got her on the 8th Feb 2011 and she was in season when I got her.

It might look swollen to me because I'm not use to female dogs but it's quite thick and longish. Idk how to really describe it.

I'm pretty sure she's not in season anymore. She has only been in contact with one male dog who's neutered anyway and never got anywhere cuz I scared him off (daft farmers dog).

Any advice would be helpful thanks x

Re: Need help from a breeder

Ok thanks for the input. I never saw her before she was in season so I can't tell whether it's normal or not. I am getting her spayed next month. Would a photo be more helpful? I didn't know whether that would be classed as too vulgar or not.

Re: Need help from a breeder

If she has not been near a entire male then she cant be pregnant.
However while in season a bitch can get pregnant so if you are even slightly concerned that she may have been near a entire male then you need to get her mismated.

You could post a picture if you think it will help people be able to say what's wrong with her.

Good luck..

Re: Need help from a breeder

Thanks.

She was left in a forest for hours by herself by her previous owner and other dogs use to play there so I'm not sure whether she'd been in contact with a entire male. Also she was been bred for pups so the owner could have money (all 8 pups sold for £100 on Preloved to homes that weren't homechecked ). People were putting her under pressure to get rid of Pixie as she done the same with two dogs beforehand and had them taken off her due to breeding and neglect. The woman won't talk to me about her breeding history and whether Pixie has been with a entire male since.

Re: Need help from a breeder

If she is still swollen and has finished her season - then yes - she could be pregnant - particularly as it sounds like you don't where she has been / where she was left - and if there were any entire dogs around - dogs can go miles for the scent of an in-season bitch - and the deed can sometimes be done without anyone knowing about it.

If you are in ANY DOUBT at all, then take her to the vets, explain the situation and ask for the mismate jab - I would also ask about giving serious consideration about getting her neutered now she has hopefully found her 'forever' home and can be given the pet life and love she deserves.

The OP has the dog up for rehoming in the rehoming section. I believe the plan was to have her spayed in March. But I am with you on the sooner the better at least that way she will be healed up from the spay before she is rehomed.

She can't stay with me which is a shame as I love this big girl. She'll be spayed in March. If she finds a home before then, I'll make sure the owners do it. The vets refuse to do it before March.

But from what you've said there is a possibility she could be pregnant!
