Re: Lots of calls......but.....

My mate wants a blue staff dog, but she's looking on champ dogs etc... Not sure when she'd be able to have one though... And she doesn't meet your over 25 criteria.

Re: Lots of calls......but.....

you can still be a idiot and over 25 you might have a nice couple age 23 at work own home, or some people might even send their parents if that is on the advert!

Re: Lots of calls......but.....

Isn't that being a tad narrow-minded? Not all under 25's are 'chavy' and not all over 25's aren't.

State that these animals are family pets, not guarddogs or show dogs. If they ask the size of the dog and that's there only concern, cut them off. Make sure you visit the homes of the people who buy the dogs.
I know quite a few 'chavs' who are very good at sounding respectable over the phone.

I'm not a chav but with my midlands accent and the slang I use, I sound like one yet I don't wear Burberry or baseball hats or big gold rings and I don't care whether I look hard and I am certainly not into big scary looking dogs or whatever a 'chav' represents.

Re: Lots of calls......but.....

I am struggling to understand why you need to be so specific.

You have bred a litter of pups which rehoming outlets are full of at the moment - at a time when the country is in financial turmoil and ALL pups are taking just that little longer to sell.

I lay NO specifications down when I put my pups details on CD and my website - preferring to get to know each prospective owner and their families as individuals - some don't get to visit, others get turned away after visiting - and I get a good feel for how they will be with fully grown Labs by allowing them to spend time with my older dogs before they even see the pups - dogs are surprisingly good judges of character - and you can tell very quickly who the 'naturals' are with dogs - for example, something as petty as being worried about dog hair would be a turn off for me, in a breed that many don't realise can shed for Brtain at times.

I think the age restriction is a bit 'off' - my daughter (admittedly not looking for a dog until she has her own home and then will probably have one of mine) - is nearly 22, has a couple of tattoos and piercings !!! - but is a very respectable young lady who has a degree and is a qualified nurse - likewise my nephew, stepson and many of their friends are equally respectable and responsible.

You 'say' travelling all the way from Northampton - my litters have gone probably a couple of thousand square miles across the UK and further afield - where are you advertising them? that in itself can give an indication of the type of enquiries you are likely to get.

Presumably all the relevant health tests have been done, so they 'stand out from the crowd'.

I think you DO need to be even more cautious than most breeders because of the breed - but nevertheless - you can 'elicit' the required information by talking to them, meeting them, seeing them with the dog(s) and the pups etc - you don't have to do it at advert stage - what are you going to do if a young looking 30 year old comes to visit? ask them for age ID?

I never said that because someone is under 25 they are a chav, I set the age limit because it gives me piece of mind, always have done always will, the same as I take photocopys of there id and keep it filed with the contracts they have sign.

I was simpley pointing out that thats how most of the coversations have gone.

But virtually every single breeder of every single breed gets enquiries they wouldn't consider even responding to if they felt they could get away with it.

To get the best cross section of potential owners, you need to advertise in the right places, and also recognise that in the current climate, you could well end up with a far bigger doggie family than you originally anticipated.

I agree with you on this.

I am only 21. Yet I take very good care of my dogs, have never used them for fighting, never scared anyone with them or done anything out of line with them.

I agree again 100%.

I had someone ask about pups the other day who refared to puppies as "things".
Needless to say I was more than shocked.
