Using a stud for his first time

Hiya,
I am going to use a maiden (is that the right word for a virgin dog? lol) stud on my experienced bitch next time. He lives with a bossy bitch and he's such a sop she put him off and they didn't end up mating. I was not there, the owner just thought let nature take its course and it didn't happen. I want to give this boy confidence. Will it be better to take him away from this bossy bitch and bring him to my house, where Eve will no doubt be completely at ease and help proceedings, or will it be better for his confidence on his home turf? I know it is usual for the bitch to go to the dog, but I'm just wondering if he will be more confident away from his overpowering housemate.

Re: Using a stud for his first time

What does the stud dog owner recommend, she is surely the best person to ask?

Is she an experienced, established dog breeder?

The stud dog owner is bowing to my experience.
She has never bred before.

Re: Using a stud for his first time

as you know I dont breed but I would have thought he would be more comfortable in his own home!

Could the owner seperate the bossy girl and give him a few days rest before you bring your girl to him?

Re: Using a stud for his first time

I'm umming and ahhhhing at my response to you. We have since had a similar problem using a maiden stud (not my dogs, just advice I dished out).... Basically the dog had forever been told off for humping other dogs and when it came to his chance- he was very reluctant in trying, he'd mount, but any slight movement from his owner and he'd back off. They rang me telling me the issue so I advised them to bitch owner handle the stud (experienced breeders) and the stud owner to remain out of sight..... nothing.... he'd try but if he heard her, would climb off.
Next step, take both dogs to neutral ground.... stud owner remains at home.... They only went 2 doors up, to a friends house.... but it was enough for the stud to lose his inhibitions and get the job done.... ummm... so to speak

Re: Using a stud for his first time

This dog has never been told not to hump, I made sure I told her that when she first got him. He was imported a few months ago and this was the first time he has been near a bitch in season. His owner said she was really encouraging towards him but the bitch growled and he is very sensitive so was easily put off. I think it probs is best for me to go there with Eve, hide their bitch, see if he will do the deed and if not, as you say, take him to neutral ground.

Re: Using a stud for his first time

The first time Chester was used it took him nearly a week to do the deed, even though the bitch wa throwing herself at him
Second time he was used it took him 5 minutes
