Question Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

Well i thought i would ask and find out some information and see if anyone on here feeds their bitch a raw diet while she was pregnant.

Currently roxy is half raw half normal dog food but we intend on going fully raw at some point in the near future, but i thought i would try and find some information out about it, and what happens with weaning is it ok to wean straight on to raw? although i no alot of dog owners dont raw feed, when we first got roxy she was on a mixture of both.

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

When Coco was pregnant on her last litter we gave her a raw chicken wing or lamb bone 2-3 times per week on top of her normal food. Her puppies had really good weights.
Don't know if this helps at all...

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

I would be careful about weaning your pups onto raw as unfortunately, not all puppy owners view it in the same way.

However, that is not to say you can't 'supplement' the pups diet - I add all sorts to my litters diet including chicken, fish, rice pudding and beef to name a few (generally cooked rather than raw though - and I do find it strengthens their constitution)

I am not even going to attempt to advise you on weaning pups onto raw - as I've never done it - but there are ways of introducing them to products such as chicken wings while they are still in the litter - hopefully someone who has been through it will be able to advise you

Think carefully about pups going to new homes, new owners may not want to go down that route - so you may have to start separating them for feeding (which I often do anyway with all my pups) to be able to raise any pups you are keeping on the diet of your choice

yeah i no what you mean about peoples views on it if someone had asked me a year ago to feed my dog raw meat i would of thought they was nuts although ive now managed to convert my parents onto feeding their gsd and husky raw, i like the idea of mainly puppy food but giving small portions of raw food, If we breed her we do plan on keeping 1 or 2 back so they will need to be used to the raw way of life

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

Get the book grow your pups with bones by Dr billinghurst it is fantastic!! Covers from how to get the best eggs and sperm production tonfeeding during pregnancy what to supplement and what not and how to raise the litter and wean it on raw it's fab!!

I'm a raw enthusiast and just because some owners don't feel the same about Raw it wouldn't stop me weaning my pups onto raw in te slightest. People need educating about their options and canine nutrition. You can also supply a dehydrated raw like ziwi peak or k9 natural in your puppy packs as an alternative which are better than any dry/wet foods out there they are the nearest thing to raw on the Market!

Raw fed pups tend to wean later than kibble fed mum tends to have more milk too and the puppies grow at a slower rate! There's different ways of weaning onto raw people have different opinions on what's suitable so I would research and make the decision yourself. With bones you need to score the meat and chuck it in the pen and let them play with it before their teeth come in so they try to tear the meat off etc by the time they are use to it their teeth will be in and they will crunch right through the bones!

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

see, I'm doing it again, responding without reading fully

We only gave the puppies a small amount of cooked chicken breast mixed in with their normal food but didn't start giving Tipsy raw food until she was 4 months old as it would help with her teething... and it did, she now has beautiful teeth, lovely and straight just how they should be

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

I have done it.... mine are fed raw, but I won't wean pups onto raw for the simple reason most new owners won't feed raw and pups don't do well going from raw onto complete mix, whereas complete mix pups go fine going onto raw.

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

Kali has always had raw food and did throughout her pregnancy, since coming here none of the dogs have had anything else. Her pups were weaned onto it at three weeks - with advce from Mal breeders who always wean onto raw and all of the puppy buyers had this fully explained, plus a diet sheet, a print out of the barf uk website and a booklet explainig all the of the basics of the barf diet. They also had a weeks supply of frozen food for each pup.

One of the owners was so impressed that he asked if he could print out some extra copies for his work colleagues.

I don't see that there's any difference is selling a pup that's on a raw diet to one that's on commercial - after all we changed our pups from comercial to raw once they came here. As long as people know how to do it properly, there shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you give them lots of info to take home and read.

Re: Raw feeding and pregnancy ect

I have a litter due in 2 weeks. My bitch is fed a completely raw diet.

Natural instinct do a weaning paste of chicken and bone. The bone is ground really finely and it has everything growing pups need apparently. Sounds like good stuff. It's not on their website though, you have to order it over the phone

I shall be sending this home with any puppy buyers with lots of info to.
