Re: Looking at the BRS.

Was reading an article on a certain breed that gets eye problems because the skin folds on their faces cause the skin and eyelashes to roll inwards into their eyes causing the eyes to be sratched and then they can ulcerate. So obviously that can be passed on. Apparently 3 years ago the KC decreed that
dogs who had had this surgically corrected could not be shown, and asked that vets to report, any corrective surgery that was done on any dogs to them. Some breeders answer, to the problem apparently is to get a veterinary staple gun and "tackle" the eyes as its called themselves. Apparently the breeders are not only notifying other breeders how its done they included before and after shots complete with staples showing of the pups.

These are KC registered pups, still therefore being registered, and apparently not BYBs or PFs either.

Just checked it up and it is one of the things to test for Haemophilia A.
At the end of the column with all the tests it says DNA, so I think it means there is a DNA test available for it. If its the same as hemophilia inn humans, from what I can remember of Biology lessons (Long ago Now) Males are affected by Hemophillia, but the mother can carry it although doesnt suffer from it. As every living thing human or dog chromosomes are in pairs, of which you inherit 1 from mum and one from dad to make the pair, then I would think its not enough just to test the Dad, the mum would have to be tested too. DNA tests can come out, afftected (both have the disease) Non affected (the gene isnt there) or carrier (The parent wont actually have it and develope it) but they can pass it on. This you will have to check me on as Im rusty. But 2 carriers can produce affected pups. I think also an affected and a carrier can produce affected pups. and obviouly 2 affected will produce affected pups. So I would think dad and mum would have to have had the test.

Other tests are also published in the BRS at quarterly intervals, but hip scores are only done once.
The trouble with eye testing alone, is that pups can be tested when young, be clear on the visual eye test, be bred from and then develope later onset things like Hereditary cataracts. By then its too late they can have been bred from. say you breed at 2/3 and even do yearly testing, breed from them and carry on yearly testing, they might have later onset appear at 5,6 or 7.

In a lot of breeds including Mals now I think a DNA test is underway for Hereditary cataracts. with this you can then tell once and for all it the parents are affected (likely to develope it) clear, or a carrier (Paired with another carrier or an affected it can be passed on).

Re: Looking at the BRS.

I dont think ads like "not if as for pet homes only" help, if more people realised that it's only £12 to register a pup and the breeder can add endorsements on it

Vets etc need to shout out about health testing etc these are people your meant to trust but will just say " yes they look healthy you can breed" Instead og saying look your dog needs this and this done before you think about breeding

That's a much better way of tackling the problem as so many offspring could have have it by the time the sire/dam show any signs.
