Re: Needing your help!!!

I cant remember if I read it or not but what about a section helping potential cross breeders find out what health tests are for them, the really popular cross's.

...how to import / export to widen gene pools .....the requirements for the pet passport and the regulations for Europe and non EU countries when importing.

Frozen semen - links to the labs that deal with this whole process and a bit about how it works

Idexx tesing and taking bitches abroad for mating

the increasing importance of breed data bases to research stud dogs and brood bitches and how to find them ( via breed clubs )

rearing pups, socialisation, and how to provide lots of new experiences, puppy testing
selling pups - questions to ask prospective owners - where to advertise

...I'm sure I'll think of more later on .....

Re: Needing your help!!!

Your book sounds pretty comprehensive Tanya and it just occurred to me that some unethical breeders will find it useful also. A minor point but maybe you should include a bit about the BYB industry/ethics in the intro or somewhere??

The first chapter is all about "do i have what it takes to be a breeder?" and the ethics surrounding breeding... TBH those breeders who insist on breeding after the ethics session at the beginning are either doing it for the "right" reasons or will do it regardless, but at least they will have the knowledge infront of them..... You can take a horse to water.....

Re: Needing your help!!!

I think by the end of this thread your book will probably have doubled in size!
Even with no intention to breed, I think this book will be really interesting, even from someone who wants to buy a puppy. I think if most people realised how much effort went into puppies, they would have a whole new level of respect for breeders. The decent ones that is. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Re: Needing your help!!!

A great idea all round.

I'd buy a copy just for the interest and recommend it to people I meet who say they want to breed.

Re: Needing your help!!!

I've heard one of the hardest things about doing a book is getting it published. Have you got a publisher sorted out yet? You should start with a synopsis and an example chapter or two of the style, get it round as much as possible, maybe look at getting an agent. The Writers and Artists Year Book should point you towards the most likely possibilities.

You can self-publish, but it doesn't come cheap.
