Breeders what do you look for

This is a question for breeders, what do you lokk for in puppy buyers and what would put you off selling them one of your pups?

We are planning our pup soon (when we have decided on the breed) but i am worried we could be turned down for whatever reason, I am a bit of a worrier when it comes to things like this.

I am also a stay at home mum, we have one child our own house and back garden and can afford insurance, toys, treats, food etc.

Re: Breeders what do you look for

If only life were so simple.

All you can do is be honest and be yourself - ostensibly, the way you describe yourselves, you would be an ideal family for a pup.

I always look at the way people are with my dogs (they never see the pups first) - until they've met the older dogs - how they cope with them, and how the dogs react to them tells me so much more than any individual ever could if they gave me their life history and asked every question under the sun.

It's good you are doing your research and thinking seriously about these things - but every breeder will differ in their criteria - so don't try to be something you are not.

For example, if you came to my house and a bouncy lab freaked you out - and you were bothered about dog hair - then IMHO a Lab is not necessarily for you - but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be suitable for a smaller or less exuberant breed - just that I would then take some convincing that a Lab was the right dog for you.

Yes. some labs are lovely and calm and steady - I've got four of those here - but then I've got 3 who are completely bonkers - but the hair and the mud in wet weather don't change however calm or bouncy they are
Luvdogs and SpringerHusky like this.

Re: Breeders what do you look for

I am just finding out what I want and what puts me off...but here goes.

I am one of "a few" breeders who checks facebook, so if you have anything you shouldnt really on there then hide them. One example of this is someone contacted me after a pup I checked them out on facebook and all they had were pictures of her drunk, party pictures, pictures of the house littered in beer cans and a list of every day she went out on the piss. Needless to say I dont think that sort of place is good for a puppy. (Not saying you would be like that but its a example...well its a true story...but a example).

Present yourself well, if you are emailing avoid slang (even I find it hard, when I get mad I say "it were me" rather than "it was me". Stupid Lancashire accent.

Re-search the breed ALOT before going to the breeder, that way you can talk about almost anything she asks you about the breed and impress the breeder.

Give out as much information as you can, offer them to come visit your house to assess you. (even if they dont take you up on the offer at least they know you are keen).

Good luck
What is your chosen breed?

Thankyou both for the reply.

So far we have narrowed it down to shih tzu or yorkie.

Re: Breeders what do you look for

Just be yourself and be totally honest about what you're looking for and what your intentions are... ie pet, show or breeding potential.

Both fantastic breeds of dog...

Must say I do love shih's more but yorkies are great dogs too.

Good luck and I hope you find a great breeder.
