Re: How and when to approach stud dog owners

I MDR1 test mine, but I sometimes wonder whether it is such a big deal, after all, you only have to avoid ivermectin and family if they are mutant. There are other wormers etc available - so if you have a collie and you haven't tested, you just use the ones which are safe.

True, but don't forget horses and other livestock are wormed with ivermectin based products, so knowing their status means being vigilent for poo on walks or at agility practice since so many are held in indoor schools (for example), and a lot of the products on the pet travel scheme are ivermectin family based, or even just playing with dogs on a walk - if they have been recently treated and your sensitive dog grabs their scruff in play, or at a boarding kennels, or if your dog has a tangle with a fox since treating fox mange needs ivermectin

Yes, its a bit of an overkill, but knowing means you can be vigilient in these situations where with a non MDR1 dog you wouldn't need to be

Very true.
A good friend of mine sends her pups with a list of products to avoid and even farm stock products to avoid and a list of products that are safe.

Alaska and Kai are both fine off ivermectin and have been since I got them.
Aiden had ivermectin in his flea treatment the other week and he's fine too.

as yet there are only a few collie breeders who mdr1 test those that do don't always hip or eye score , that i find odd.

Dexter will me MDR1 tested soon for my satisfaction only.

the sheltie breeders i know of don't test for it.
