Re: 6 month old Beagle - do we get him neutered?

Hi, there.
I don't mean to stir up a controversy, but why neutering him? My dog, who will be 3 in the summer, is only a pet and I have no intention to breed from him, either now or in the future. However, I also have no intention to get him neutered. I have read as much material as I could find on the subject and have not been convinced by the pro arguments at all. I think that nature gave him his 'bits' for a purpose and I prefer not to mess with his hormones unless I have to. Ok, he could develop testicular cancer when he's older. He could also develop heart disease, so should I then rip his heart out as a preventative measure? If he ever has a real medical problem that requires for him to be neutered, then I will obviously go ahead with it. But until then, my boy is keeping his bits.

Please note that what I said above is my personal opinion and it only refers to my own dog, who has and always will have a stable home and will never be allowed to stray. I completely understand the need to neuter abandoned dogs in order to prevent any more unwanted puppies being born.

Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck and I am convinced you will make the best decision for you and your dog.

Diana
