Stud dogs

I am thinking of breeding my springer at the end of the year but not sure which stud dog to use....She is from excellent working lines so do i put her to another spaniel with working lines or shall i put her to a show springer...
Alot of working line springers just end up as loving pets so if i crossed with a show type then the puppies wouldn't be as hyper therefore making then easier to manage pets and hopefully have homes for life.....What are your thoughts on this...

Personally I think it may be better to cross working to working. Every show x working is very odd looking like my wonderful lad was, his head and feet were too big for his body he had this stumpy look.

The thing is even if you mix show to working, you can't guarentte you will have show personality, you could easily have the working side.

Also the chance of finding a health tested show springer that would mix to working would be very thin. Make you get all health tests done before breeding her.

so perosnally i'd say stick with working.

Re: Stud dogs

Thanks springerhusky...I do know of a show springer with all health checks that i could use...But i will go working to working...never thought about temperament going the other way....She will have all health checks and eye tests before breeding and if there are any problems then i won't be breeding...That is top of the list. Thanks

Re: Stud dogs

What are tour reasons for breeding her? What kind of pups are you wanting to produce? And what are the homes you have lined up looking for?
Do you work your bitch?

Re: Stud dogs

I've bred Springers from Field Lines for over 20 years. Field and Show lines have become so different they really should be registered as separate breeds in my opinion. They really do not look much alike and they are bred for two very different purposes. There has not been a dual champion in the breed since 1938 and more than likely there never will be.

The vast majority of the puppies I place go to homes where they will be hunting/family companions. Their gentle nature, ease in training, etc. make them one of the most ideal breeds for people who like to hunt and who want a family pet as well. Let's face it, hunting season only last a few weeks out of the year. Most hunting dogs double as the family pet.

Springers from field lines are not door mats, but they are not hyeractive either... When taught their house manners, as all dogs should be, they make wonderful housedogs. My daughter has a pup from our last litter that just turned a year old in January.. She works and he stays in the house while she's at work (she comes home at lunch and lets him out). He is very well behaved. He has no "accidents" and hasn't in several months. I have him when she is out of town. He usually sleeps at my feet when he's in the house.... Here's my newest dog, "Lefty"....she's 15 months old. Really hyper as you can see... Lefty is from 100% Field Lines...

This is my daughter and her male Springer, "Ted"...

I'd strongly reccomend that you breed you dog to another dog from 100% field lines...

Re: Stud dogs

As already posted, what are your reasons for breeding? You need to have a goal, end purpose, and that will tell you which direction you need to look for a stud dog to compliment your bitch.

If you're just breeding to supply the pet market, then have a rethink, there are far too many springers about, even those who work/show are thinking twice about breeding at the moment because of the amount of pups being churned out. You have to ask yourself, is it worth risking your bitch purely for the sake of curiosity?
