Re: Stud dogs
When you say working dog, do you actually work her?
If not then why do you want to breed from her? We breed working springers in from champion lines and personally I feel that you should know it would be better to breed her to working lines as the although they are the same breed the working dog and show dog are very different dogs. Yes working dogs have a higher drive and a bit more enegery, but they are only "mad" when people don't put enough work or exercise into them.

Re: Stud dogs
I've seen some Springers from Show Lines that had nasty temperaments...... My father-in-law had one. He was a very gentle man but "Ben", his old Springer had to be watched. On the other hand, in the 20 plus years I've owned and bred Springers from field lines, I've yet to see one that was anything but gentle and loving and have yet to receive a report back from Pups I've placed that had temperament problems.

Re: Stud dogs
I do not work my springer in the field as she is in training to do agility but she is from working lines..Her sire was british field trial champ in 2001...As with everything you gain experience by being involved and since buying missey and wrags are show springer bitch we have learnt so much...We have been thinking about breeding her as we want another pup that we can train in the field for my husband and my son. We have thought about this and are not just going to rush into it..She has got to have all her health checks and eye tests before we make the final decision but if there are any problems at all then we wouldn't even consider breeding her..If we breed her it will be with another working springer....I know there are lots of puppies out there but i want missey to have 1 litter....I do have a few people who we know that are interested in having a puppy from us and they will have loving lifetime homes

I dont want to sound mean but health checks are not what you need, health tests are what you need. The kennel club say you should do these: Quote:
I am pretty sure Springers should have : cord1- PRA test which you can get from this company: LABOKLIN (UK)|Genetic Diseases | Dogs| cord1- PRA ( Cone-rod dystrophy 1 ) Optigen list: Phosphofructokinase test as a springer test. These are all things you should do and get the results back before anything else. I knew I wanted to breed my bitch but it all hung on her hip scores and her eye test which she passed now I am wating on her CEA DNA test results which I sent off a week ago. You need to decide if you are willing to spend £xxxxx amount on tests and your dog fail on the last one meaning you have to re-think or completely scrap the idea of breeding. By the time Alaska goes to stud in november (ish) I will have spent £500 on health tests alone. Then I have to pay a stud fee (I am lucky as in my breed they are not that costly but that takes up that amount to £700) then if she doesnt take....we have ot go through it all the next time she's in season. A small fortune in vet fee's (check ups at first) then if something goes wrong...well I still dread the thought of that. Then there are the cost of the pups actually being there (carpet eaten, cost of food) and I will be testing my pups before they leave so thats a extra fortune. Anyway, I would work on her health tests. How old is she? |
