Studs. Would you be offended if......

the stud you offered was not chosen?

Time is quickly creeping along for my girls season and hopefully a mating. This will be mine and her first times.

I was all sorted until a potential problem came to light within the chosen studs' lines, so onto my next choices. Just by chance I spoke with the owner of a stud that was not that high on my list and she offered his services, I haven't accepted or declined yet. My number two choice I haven't yet spoken with, which I will do in the next few days.

If you had offered me your stud and I went with my other choice, would you be offended? I will not use that stud just so not to offend, I will use the one best suited to my girl but was wondering. Hope I made sense

Re: Studs. Would you be offended if......

If you do - then I would hate to count the number of stud owners I've offended (and I've only bred three litters ).

On a serious note - I wouldn't commit to any stud until you are 100% happy, as a stud owner, if I didn't feel my boy was right for your girl, then I would say so - some might not - and again, it depends what the bitch owner is looking for - if they were looking for a dog proven to produce good quality show dogs - at this stage - I would send them elsewhere - if they had a reasonably nice bitch with good health results looking for an equally nice dog with good health results and I felt the dog would complement the bitch - then I would probably view it differently.

I would never 'turn a bitch with the right tests away' as such - but that might mean directing them elsewhere - and I know quite a few who have done this.

===============================

So in answer to your question - enquire - but try not to commit until you are happy - BUT - if something comes to light which makes you uncertain - it may be prudent to ask more questions before disregarding the dog altogether.

Every breed will have it's health issues - some more serious than others - but - sometimes people baulk without really understanding what it actually means (and I am not saying this is the case here for one minute) - but there are some conditions which are rare but serious (and in some instances now can be prevented) while there are some conditions which are more common and seemingly pretty random - but while they SHOULD stop you breeding from the dog and / or bitch until more is known - the actual impact on the dogs health and quality of life for probably the majority of affected dogs could well be minimal (and sometimes actually proven non-existent).

I suspect that load of garbage is absolutely no help at all but safe to say - she's YOUR girl, and you want the best for her - a dog might be perfect for one bitch and totally wrong for another = that's not wrong - that's breeding (and sometimes - the outcomes go completely the opposite way to which you anticipated lol

I would use which ever best suited my bitch and I also wouldn't be offended if I offered someone the chance to use my dog and they refused I would not be offended.

I think it would be polite to let the person know that you don't want to use their stud. There's no reason they should get offended just because you don't want to use their dog though

I don't see why they would be offended. Not every stud matches every bitch and if you find a better match then you should use them. Just be polite when you tell the stud owner

Thanks, I don't think she would be offended, just wanted reasurance I guess I have not committed to any yet and if I dont find one that compliments her, I would not go to an unsuitable stud just to get puppies

I personally wouldnt OFFER my dog at stud, I would wait until I was approached by the bitch owner, then go through all the pedigree, health testing etc

So no she shouldnt be offended

Re: Studs. Would you be offended if......

See I should read things properly and not just skip over stuff, I didn't notice that someone had offered their dog as a stud

Have to be totally honest here, I don't really like it when someone offers a dog without even being asked. I know it's a bit different, but when I mentioned to someone that I was intending to breed one of my girls, they were quizzing me over who I was using and why then making their own suggestions I appreciate help and advice when I ask for it but I sometimes wonder what people are thinking about and what sense of logic their using when they've not even seen my bitch and so have no idea of what will suit her

If this person wasn't on your list then maybe you could just politely thank her for her kind offer but let her know that you have something else in mind.

Agree, very odd way of doing it

But no, she shouldn't be offended, just like if someone enquired about using a dog on their bitch and were told no because the mating was unsuitable i wouldnt think they should be offended

Thats exactly what happened, she just happened to suggest one of her own. She does know my bitch, having judged her several times, and knows her lines
