Re: Is this stage 1?
I had already read the page and I didn't think there was anything saying it was illegal but what he showed me clearly said it was no longer considered legal as it was considered mutliation. He knew from the time Freyja had her ceasarian that I wanted them removed so had most likely contacted them himself to find out how he stood.
One of the people who told me it was illegal is a retired legal secretary and she follows the law concerning dogs closely. I have also heard of a big name in whippets who has had to leave dew claws on her pups. Mine will be keeping theirs I would prefer to have them removed than to risk them ripping them out when they are older but there is no way I would risk removing them myself or getting anyone else other than a vet to do it. They are now 5 days old so to old to have it done anyway. I have a friend in Scotland who says no vets up there will remove dew claws. |

Re: Is this stage 1?
The babies dew claws were removed with no problem. They only had front ones. Its best if they are removed from pugs because they have such big round eyes and the removal reduces the likelihood of them acccidently damaging their own eyes.
I also had their mouths checked and they are all perfect I can't believe how much they are growing! When they have opened their eyes I will post more photos. Jayne |

Re: Is this stage 1?
I always thought that was the case anyways - not that I would ever have fronts removed.

Re: Is this stage 1?
This is taken from The Council for Docked Breeds website:
Is Dew Claw removal still legal? The removal of dew claws is still permitted. In England it is allowed under The Mutilations (Permitted Procedures) (England) Regulations 2007 and in Wales under The Mutilations (Permitted Procedures) (Wales) Regulations 2007. Both Regulations operate alongside the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. As such the removal of dew claws by laypeople (over 18 years of age) or vets, before the dogs eyes are open, is allowed. The regulations state that the procedure must be carried out in the following manner: (a) in accordance with any relevant requirement in Schedules 2 to 9, (b) in such a way as to minimise the pain and suffering it causes to the animal, (c) in hygienic conditions, and (d) in accordance with good practice. I think that the anomaly lies with the rule of the surgery........ I.E. must be carried out BEFORE the eyes are open MM |
