Hi, my lhasa apso bitch gave birth to seven lovely puppies last week, she rejected three of them one after the other(she is a small lhasa),, i have been hand rearing them unfortunately we lost one a couple of day later,, i have been continuing to feed the two of them and she is successfully feeding four and they are all gaining weight.. i am looking for advice on introducing them back to their mother either now or in a couple of weeks, i let her see one today and she was growling at him and pawing at him, therfore i am wondering if this can be done as i dont want her to hurt them
thanks hazel: ![]() |

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
she done great just after the birth but the next day i found her holding the runt in her paws and not allowing him to feed, he was quite poorly i was feeding him for a day then noticed she was doing it with another and another(these were the small ones in the litter). to the stage that i was feeding the three of them, the vet said to keep them away from her as she was rejecting them and i had to keep a close eye on them 10 days later and they are gaining weight steadily but they do belong with their mum and i was hoping to get them back together with her and the other puppies

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
Think you are going to have to change her to a bigger bed
only just room in there for her and those four. They are all looking good though, but I would not upset the apple cart now by trying to put the other two back in with them ![]()

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
I have to agree with Tashi here, that bed is far too small for mum and 6 babies. She may be pushing them out as there's just not enough room for them.
We had 6 pups from our oldest girl in 2009, here they are in their bed

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
it is just possible that there is/was an underlying problem with the 3 puppies that mum wouldnt accept
i have never known a mum to take to 4 puppies and totally reject 3 you have already lost one of these little ones ( i think reading your post )that mum rejected dont want to sound cruel but maybe there is something not quite right with the other 2 mum has a very good instinct when something is not right with her babies and i could not see her accepting 4 and totally rejecting 3 confused:

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
hi there, thanks for all of your replies i bought her a large bed and introduced the estranged pups one by one she has took to the brilliantly although she is trying to feed them but they don't know how to feed from her but we are practising latching them on to her and i supplement their feeding afterwards, the rest of the pups are bigger and get there first, i do feel that i was hasty keeping them from her but at the beginning when i was trying to get them to latch on she bit me and was very protective and had an infection hopefully everything is coming together now

Re: Help with my estranged puppies please !!!!
We had a little puppy in our litter, he was having trouble at first with latching on so following the advice given to me here, I let one of the other pups start sucking and then took it off and put the little one's mouth right on it and held him there until he started sucking. The first time did take me a while and I did have to squeeze a little bit of milk out and use my little finger to get him to taste it (he would suck my little finger) but once he knew what he had to do to get the milk he was always first in the queue.
I did try to make sure that he had plenty of time on the bigger teats down the back end too so was moving the pups around to be sure he got the lions share with him being the smallest. He stayed a little bit smaller than the others but boy was he a feisty little bugger lol ![]()
