Would you keep trying with this dog?

Your dog has reabsorbed the puppies last two times you've tried and has phantom pregnancies. Do you
A) Give up and think she's not going to have puppies and it's not worth putting her through it again and get her spayed
B) Say you absolutely must have a litter out of her she's such a perfect example of the breed and it's natural instinct for a dog to want to have a litter so you want to have a puppy out of her

I would give up and get her spayed wondering what breeders thought. She was on my pet shame poor thing a bullmastiff

That is the worst thing people can think. Dogs don't WANT puppies. Their hormones kick in to produce a desire to mate, nothing more. It's the owners who think their pet would want to have a puppy when really what they mean is THEY want puppies. Bitches have no desire to have puppies.

There is not such things a s perfect example of the breed, but is this a top Champion that we are talking about or someone who just THINKS their bitch is a perfect example of the breed?

Personally, I would not subject a bitch to any more attempts at breeding from her and I would get her spayed.

They were a breeder no idea if they showed or not but he was insistent that his lines were so awesome and he absolutely had to continue them .

How can you say bitches have no desire to have puppies? Have you had a free and open discussion on the matter with many bitches? If not, what is your statement based on? It's just as irrational as saying they do want puppies.

In the OP's case I'd spay. Whether the bitch wanted me to or not.

Re: Would you keep trying with this dog?

She's coming into season every 5 months as well . It's because of the other two bitches apparently they're causing her to come into season too quickly so she's not recovering right or something? And yes he's going to breed her again she's 4 for god's sake

Re: Would you keep trying with this dog?

I would stop and think hold on whats making her reabsorbe the puppies, I would ask other peoples opinion and the vets, it would depend to me how valuble the bitches bloodlines where to the breed, if not very id spay her and keep her as a miuch loved pet

Re: Would you keep trying with this dog?

Well, that's what I thought the reaction would be - a typical breeder who doesn't know what they're doing and knowing the breed doesn't surprise me.

Firstly, no decent breeder would consider their bitch perfect. Part of being a good breeder is taking an objective view of their bitch faults and all. Secondly, a decent breeder would consider their bitch's wellbeing first and b) understand the possible impact of breeding from such a bitch that could pass on the difficulty of carrying a litter into the genepool.

No lines are worth putting a bitch through all that.

Re: Would you keep trying with this dog?

She'd all the hormone level checks and everything and they said there was no medical reason why she couldn't carry to term but she kept reabsorbing the puppies at around 5 weeks. I don't think the lines are worth it to keep putting a bitch through it especially losing them so late into the pregnancy
