Question Labrador types ?

Hello peeps,

The hunter Labrador dogs that are of the big heavy size are the usual type of Labrador, the thing is i have seen very few of the smaller less heavy type of Labradors, my old dog Chewie in my Avatar was bred from this type of Labrador with a Doberman, he was quite small.

My question is what is the correct name for these smaller, thinner boned, muscled, smaller sized head type of Labradors ? Or are they just like that because of the size of the litter or because they may be the runt ?

I have searched google but found nothing and only found one or two pictures of these type of Labradors.

Any help appreciated, thank-you

Re: Labrador types ?

My understanding is that working labs tend to be smaller and slimer than the show type.
But I know very little about labs - sorry.

Re: Labrador types ?

I thought the field bred labs were lighter than the show lines.

I would agree they are bred more for stamina to work all day long in the field.

The correct name is 'labradors'

The labrador breed is a very diverse one and has a number of different 'types'. There is a divide between the heavier show types and the lighter working ones (although there are heavier working dogs too) and there are many that sit somewhere between the two extremes. Numerically, it is the most popular pure breed dog in this country and others too, and it's adaptability, biddability and kindness has led to it being used for all kinds of work (not just gundog work) as well as being a popular pet so it is easy to see how these differences have come about.

I think this really depends on where you are and who you mix with whether a pet/working/show. Typically, people refer to the lighter labradors as working and the heavier ones at show, but that is not always the case as a quick look at their pedigree will reveal.

But they are all labradors

Re: Labrador types ?

Great, thanks for the info on this.

I know they are all called Labradors but what i did not know was that the smaller more athletic type's are usually the 'working' type Labradors.

When i say usual type, i meant the ones you always tend to see around on the net and on the streets, i think the bigger type are more popular.

I would prefer to get (when the time comes) the very athletic type working dog Labrador, i find them to be very intelligent, not that any other type are not, just that they are more refined imo of coarse.

The internet does seem to be full of the full bodied type so it might be a long hog for me in finding the right one.

Thanks.

There are a lot of working kennels around have a look on champdogs. The show type are more popular

Generally they are, but it can be deceptive (which was the point I was trying to make). Many of the lighter bred labs are pet bred and often have no working lines in them. And equally, you can get some heavier type working dogs too although they are still different from those in the show ring.

I think that can be true where we are too, although, there are many overweight pet labs around which can give the illusion that they are bigger than they are. Likewise a working dog will be usually be very fit and lean, but can still have good bone - it just gives the impression that they are lighter built than they actually are.

The working type (as opposed to a lighter pet bred type) usually are of course I'm biased

.

No don't worry, there are plenty of good working breeders out there who health test - many are on the www although many are not, but if you approach one of the big kennels, even if they don't have anything at the time, they can usually point you in the right direction.

This will probably give you a better starting point than Champdogs which is mainly show breeders but there are many more that aren't there too

Re: Labrador types ?

How different ?

Im just mainly looking for an intelligent, athletic black one even if it means pet bread. Iv not had a working type before but i assume they are more intelligent and want to play loads etc.

Cheers
