Mismate question

Is it possible for it to fail? My friend has a papillon and a maltese. The maltese's second season was a silent one and she didn't know until they were tied when she left for like a minute. She didn't want to have puppies and besides the maltese is only one so took her in the next day for mismate. But now she's showing signs of pregnancy. She's taking her to the vet to check for a phantom and either way she's getting spayed because she'd rather not put her through birth and raising a litter when she's only a baby. The papillon's been neutered now too. But could the mismate have failed and she be pregnant?
