Reasons for a dog becoming infertile?

I am just curious as to what reasons there are for a young (about 4) dog to become infertile? (He is not mine, but a friend of a friends) He has sired a few litters, but has recently been mated with 3 bitches (all who have had a litter before) and produced no puppies so I was just wondering if anyone knows of a reason for this?

Re: Reasons for a dog becoming infertile?

There are various reasons - the obvious one would be infection, which might mean only a temporary infertility if treated correctly. Age can make them permanently infertile, whilst simple things such as moving house or air travel can render them temporarily infertile.

The only way to check it's definitely the dog is to have a semen sample analysed for numbers and motility

Any chance he has been given steroids for anything? This might be the most likely cause in a younger dog.

No idea about the steroids, but I think that is not likely. I presume they will be taking him to the vet for sperm tests.

Mabe the matings have just been unlucky and that he is fertile. Only a visit to the vet would confirm fertility i guess

Re: Reasons for a dog becoming infertile?

Sadly some years ago one of my boys became infertile at about 5 (a beautiful champion with an outstanding temperament and very low hipscore). Then a couple of his sons did the same thing, so have suspicions that it was something hereditary but don't know what exactly.

Re: Reasons for a dog becoming infertile?

Try and pin point the first time you realised he fired blanks.... then count back 2 months.... this is the time that something is likely to have happened for him to become infertile..... fevers are the most common reason a dog becomes infertile. Trauma is also a big factor.... and one of the biggest culprits for causing infertility is a dryer blaster on a regular basis.... the testicles MUST be protected when using a blaster on the backend..... heat and being bashed about is not good for sperm production.
