Inguinal Hernia

One of Pops 3 pups has one of these, its only just 'came out' in the last few days.

The other 2 are fine and Pop never had one.

The family who are having her have and breed terriers so they checked her over (at 4 weeks) and it wasn't apparant to them either!!

They don't intend to breed her, she is just a pet for his wife,

but am wondering how I go about breaking the news to them?

What should I be doing in terms of the options I can give them?

Re: Inguinal Hernia

I once had a pup with that kind of hernia, and i got it surgically repaired before he left for his new home and his new owners were happy with that.Inguinal hernias are hereditary.

Re: Inguinal Hernia

Pixie had a hernia and whilst initially concerned a few people I spoke to said it was quite common. Breeders vet wanted to repair it when she was 7 weeks but I went and got a 2nd opinion frOm my vet who said it could wait until she was spayed as long as she was done at 6 months. Thinking back breeder did not give very good advice but I think I did get £70 off price as was going to pay half the cost of her vet!!! Thinking about it now that sounds ridiculous I know.
I assume if you are upfront about it and give them a choice of having repaired or reducing price if they still want pup shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal hernias can cause strangulation of the bowel so are not to be ignored or felt they are a minor problem. They are not the same as umbilical hernias, though very large umbilical hernias will need repaired as they too can cause strangulation if gut gets caught in the hernia.
I would get an inguinal hernia repaired as soon as your vet will do it.

Re: Inguinal Hernia

Tell them asap. I doubt they will back out over a hernia, but if they do then you may need the time to get it repaired and get her a new set of owners. An older pup with a hernia repair may be more difficult to sell.

Re: Inguinal Hernia

Ah so its something we may be able to get fixed before she goes?

I'll speak to our vets tomorrow morning so I've got something 'concrete' to tell them (the owners) rather than sending a vague email now.

Thanks for the advice,

No idea where its come from if hereditary, poppy lil, their mum or dad haven't got one or had one and neither has the sire.

glad its something that can be fixed easily though.

Re: Inguinal Hernia

I think pixies was umbilical but was on the borderline of leaving. My vet monitored it but luckily we had no problems and was repaired.
