Pregnant Pomeranian?

Heya everyone, i've been reading through the forum for a few days now and can't really find anything to help me, im hoping someone could give me some advice?

I have a pomeranian, Foxy. She's 2 years old and my little beauty
We had been considering breeding her for about 2 months before she came into heat, we were going back and forth on the situation and eventually decided not to this time. Two weeks before Foxy went into heat, we were offered another pomeranian, Boo, a 3 1/2yr old boy, as his owners, a friend of mine, are moving abroad for work and couldnt take him, so we gave him a home. We had decided that as we now had Boo we were going to forget about breeding for the time being.

This is were it all began, Foxy came into heat, and we were being so careful! they were never left alone, supervised at all times, and he didnt even seem to be paying any attention to her at all whilst she was in heat, and boy did she show off infront of him!
As we were really worried that she may be mated, we made arrangements for Foxy to go and stay with my parents until she came out of heat. That afternoon i decided i was going to paint the kitchen and while i was setting up i moved Foxy into the kitchen and Boo in the front room, i heard a yelp 2 minutes later, went into the front room thinking Boo had hurt himself and found them tied!!! I paniced and really didnt know what to do, and Foxy was panicing so all i really could do was hold her and calm her down, as i had no clue how to seperate them, and had read that forcing them can hurt one or both dogs. they were together for about 20minutes.

This was the 4th November. Since that day i have gone into overdrive with reading as much as i possibly can about breeding, pregnancy, whelping, after birth, everything! We have her a whelping box, which she she likes, and at 2 weeks was already sleeping in, its in the spare bedroom so she and pups will have peace and quiet for the first few weeks.

I worked it out and counting from the day of mating, Foxy will be 6weeks today, However, as much as i have read, we still arent 100% sure whether she is pregnant or not. we have her booked in for a checkup and ultrasound on monday so i suppose we will find out then for definite. Im just incredibly impatient and would like any help you can offer in figuring out if she is pregnant or not.
Her appetite has increased greatly, she used to pick at her food, literally having 2 or 3 mouth fulls then leaving it, and id put it back down a few hours later and she would do the same, but now, i put the food down...and its gone within 2 minutes. however saying that, last week she had a few days of not touching any food at all :/ shes put weight on, which could just be from her eating alot more. shes snappy with Boo now, which she didnt use to be, this has just started in the past week or so. She was always cuddly and liked to be snuggled next to my leg, but now shes like my little shadow, i stand up and shes straight there, i walk into another room and shes there, i go to work and my boyfriend says she sits in the window til i get back.

we have plenty of money to pay for anything that may go wrong etc "fingers crossed" nothing does though, so thats not an issue. if she is pregnant pups already have homes lined up with family members, and we are 100% willing to take any back that dont end up in a permanent, loving home, although we are sure they will! and i really am trying to ind out absoloutly everything i can ready for the birth and afterwards

I realise that some people are just going to think of me as an irresponsible pet owner, which is fine, i look at myself as that too even though i was trying to be so careful! but right now i would really appreciate any help anyone can offer me. thank you so much in advance and thanks for reading

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

I forgot to add that, although she is putting weight on, her stomach doesnt really show it when shes stood up, its when she sits down that shes a little fatty. her nipples went BRIGHT pink the first 2 weeks, then dulled down to a pink and are now pink and quite large compared to usual

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

Get in touch with a sheep scanner. I found one in Harrowgate: John Barnes 01423 330 436. You'll want to know approximately how many puppies are in there prior to her whelping. Poms usually have small litters of 1-4 puppies. If there is only 1 puppy, the birth could be immensely difficult as the puppy will likely be large and a C-section will possibly be required.

If she has too many puppies, she may also have difficult whelp as the puppies will be very tiny and contractions might not get moving quick enough to get them all out safely. How much did she weight pre-pregnancy? How much does she weigh now?

You should set up a cot or sleeping bag by the whelping box, you will need to be there for the first few days minimum, I would prefer to spend the first two or three weeks giving them 24/7 supervision. Pom puppies usually will weigh around 2.5-3 ounces at birth if they are true, purebred pomeranians. They also will sometimes have birth defects such as prolapsed intestines or intestines poking out through the belly-button, cleft palates, etc need to be carefully looked for. Do you have replacement puppy milk just in case your girl rejects her puppies? Hand-rearing is always a possibility, especially for first time mum's who may be a bit reluctant for the first few days. Do you have a whelping kit? :

A member here, Tanya has a great website that you can read through:

http://www.thinking-of-breeding.webs.com/

There's loads of information there with regards to whelping puppies.

ALSO; make sure your vet is aware when she is due, have emergency contact numbers and quickest routes to the e-vets planned beforehand!

EDIT: IF she is pregnant though, I would like to also suggest the mismate first, as you do not know the lines of this particular boy all that well it seems and either dam or sire's pedigree could have some nasty surprises waiting for the innocent lives at stake. Poms are a pretty healthy breed, but they are not fool proof!

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

Another "accidental mating" ...

Hope all goes well, please get one or both neutered before her next season or this will be an ongoing situation. It takes a lot (too much for most people) of care to keep entire dogs and bitches apart when girl is in season

Hope all goes well and mum and puppies are fine. If you were planning to breed anyway, hopefully you have a breeding mentor? They should be able to offer advice and assist with whelping of bitch. Books and online advice has it's place, but you need personal help and support if you are new to breeding!

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

What a shame you didn't come on for advice after the mating took place as really you should have got the mismate for her. Why do people leave it until the last minute And if she was flirting in front of him this should have given you a clue that there could be a mating

I'm sure you will get advice from Tanya but can only echo what Amethyst says - make sure they are both neutered before her next season.

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

You are just within the window to give a mismate jab. I would scan her and if pregnant give her that.

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

People get frustrated because they see the same story over and again. No-one is saying accidents don't happen - because we all know they do- I too have entire dogs and bitches - and I do my damndest to keep them apart - but if I knew they had been mated - and the mating wasn't right for whatever reason (I do breed my dogs after health testing) then I would go down the mismate route.

I don't know if it is too late for the mismate now - but if it is - I suggest, if you haven't done so already, you invest in, and read the "Book of the Bitch" by J M Evans and Kay White

The Book of the Bitch: A Complete ... - Google Books

Also, Tanya's website can give you a lot of useful information

Re: Pregnant Pomeranian?

Thank you for the replys, i have a copy of book of the bitch and have read through it twice now, i have also looked over tanyas website and its filled in the gaps that i needed filling in, very informative so thank you for sending me that way.

We we're at the vets on monday with her and at first the vet scanned her lying on her back and could only see one, i started panicing as i had read about the problems of just one puppy and how it can grow very large, she then stood her up and scanned again and said she was definitely carrying 2 and she though she saw another peeking from behind one but she couldnt be 100% sure of that one and we have a due date of january 2nd.

Once the whelping is over Foxy AND Boo will both be spayed and neutered, we have decided to keep one little pup which will also be spayed/neutered once he or she is old enough and the other pup is going to my mum so i will always know it will be in a good home.

We have started collecting everything together that we will need, my boyfriend built a whelping box which she has been sleeping in for quite some time now. ive also just purchased this on ebay:

DEFINITIVE Whelping Kit dog welping box puppy ID bands Petnap Definitive kit on eBay (end time 13-Jan-11 23:04:32 GMT)

I've added the heat pad to this also
so from the list of things in the whelping kit are there any other essential items i should be collecting?
we have told everyone we know to keep all there newspapers and old towels for us.

There's no need to wait until after the whelping to get Boo neutered I would do him now.
