If people believe same price should apply (their perogative) then if breeders themselves, hopefully they believe all their pups should go at price allocated to their pups that look unlikely to "make the grade" ???
I will use my boy for example in this....

When we got him.( Note the ears...perfect sheltie ears).

4 weeks after that picture was taken this happened.

Now.....
Perfect ears again.

Honestly....when his ears went up I nearly pooped myself.

It just goes to show how much a dog can change in a few weeks.

don't have bite issues or mismarks so can only speak for self, and that is all my pups go for same price. TBO i'd rather sell to pet homes rather than show.

Believe me - if you sold a Show pup - and it turned out to be unsuitable for the ring - and don't forget - unsuitability for the ring can stem from a whole host of things - then technically you have sold a dog that isn't 'fit for purpose' - so pups are generally sold as show potential.

It's the same as a working bred dog - a dog can have a string of FT CH behind him - and rather veg out on the sofa than be out in the field (and yes, it does happen) - and some show bred dogs are wired (I have one here )
  • A good tailset on a puppy can drop
  • Their ears may be wrong
  • They may grow too tall or be too small
  • They may not have a good reach of neck
  • Their topline could go out of kilter
  • In my own breed - they could be too long in the body or not sufficiently short coupled
  • they may not have the required depth of chest
  • Eye colour could be wrong
  • Mismarks CAN appear later on
  • Their nature at 8 weeks could be superb for the showring - until you actually get them in the ring

I had a gorgeous yellow boy - really nice example of the breed - qualified for Crufts at 8 months (not always the easiest in my breed because of numbers and overall quality) - he HATED showing - we stuck it out for a few months to see if things would change - but clearly it wasn't going to - and wasn't an enjoyable experience for me or the dog - and his results demonstrated this unhappiness and a fair amount of apologies from judges along those lines

This is over and above anything that may happen once the puppy is with it's new owner which may prevent it being showable.

A dog has to have a certain type of overall demeanour to make a good show dog (not to mention a very even temperament) - it doesn't really matter how perfect it might be conformationally if it isn't a showy dog - and disinterested and unhappy dogs are really a battle that most would rather not face (this is what tickles me about people commenting that showdogs don't enjoy it) - my gang absolutely ADORE showing - they go nuttier over the showbag coming out than going down the beach

Yes, I've heard a few breeders make that comment, even ones who show ...

Re: Dogs and Bitches?

On one level, if you care about the personality and character of the dog more than anything else, the gender shouldn’t matter. Your decision will be based mainly on how the puppy behaves and acts towards you and other people when you are looking at the litter.
