Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
Were the parents of your dog screened for genetic problems?
Primary concerns in Border Collies are CEA/CL, CH, TNS, Hip Dysplacia and Epilepsy. My boys parents are both CEA/CL, CH clear, his sire is TNS clear and his dam a carrier meaning he has roughly a 50/50 chance of being either clear or a carrier and should be tested himself before using him at stud. All but one of his ancestors in the last 3 generations has been hip scored. There is no test for Epilepsy at present. Milo being a rescue cross breed we doubt he was from tested parents. ![]() Trinny was from an accidental mating of two cross breeds and neither were tested for genetic problems. ![]() What problems are in your chosen breed and are your dogs from tested parents? If you breed what tests have you had done or plan to have done? |

Re: Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
Yes and No Lol
![]() Megs Parents were L2/HC DNA Tested Clear PHPV Unaffected So It made her L2/HC Hereditary Clear.PHPV & PPSC are conditions which screening for every 12 months,so if we had bred from her she would have been screened for that. Tylers Parents were PHPV/HC Unaffected,It was then brought to our attention that his Sire was a Carrier for L2,as a result Chris had him castrated. We had Tyler DNA Tested for both L2/HC if they had been anything other than Clear he would have been castrated to,thankfully he was Clear. We did know the risk we were taking though when we brought him,but both his Breeder and Sires Owner supported us,his Breeder even offered to have him back if the results had been anything other than Clear. That wasn't an option for us,he was here,he was our boy and if he needed castrating then so be it was our answer ![]() So I own two dogs that are free from hereditary conditions found in SBT's. ![]()

Re: Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
No and Yes.
Had various X's from rescue when i was growing up and i doubt they were from health tested parents. Our Lab/GSD had bad hips, our Boxer/Lab had fits-was pts at only 2,but they were from rescue centres. Our first Stafford was-in my opinion-from a BYB no health tests -PHPV eye test needed on parents. My sister brought her because our friend had a Stafford and she wanted one.Luckily had no problems with her. Our second Stafford brought was from eye tested dad,and hubby fell in love and didnt want to leave him-we have had his eyes done and he was unaffected. The Staffords which we bred recently (since the for L2HGA and HC DNA tests became available) have been tested BEFORE we bred them, for the DNA tests and the PHPV/PPSC HC eye screening. The litter we had bred just as the L2HGA test was released (2005) the bitch was tested after (she was clear resulting in the pups being clear) and has not had a litter since. Health testing is there to help you make an informed decision, and to stop you breeding blind (no pun intended) If you intend to breed then it is your responsability to know about what you are breeding, and any health problems. Knowing much more than i did when i was younger, and seeing what ignorance can do,I would never buy from un-tested parents again. It makes me mad the ones who know about health testing,eg rogram on TV with the ignorant bit@h letting her dog be used, and many more not just BYB's but well though of morons higher up in the show/breeding world, but are just ignorant as long as they are making money...Had a nice family at dog training last night with their young dog complaining that he isnt exactly like the lab side and he was moulting ![]() I was talking to our trainer about a new eye specialist in our area, and they proudly told us that their dog wouldn't need anything like that, as although his parent were KC reg they were only pets so im guessing that if i dont show my dogs it would be ok to breed without health tests as they are only pets??????![]()

Re: Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
In a small way I breed ESS, just the one breeding pair. But before I bred my first litter I had them both health checked.
Male hips 4/3, eyes clear, Female hips 5/8 eyes clear Both are dna tested for Fucosidois, Progressive Retinal Atrophy cord 1, (PRA)and Phosphofructokinase Deficineny (PFK). They are both 'clear both genes' in each case so their pups are hereditarily 'clear both genes'. If the pups are mated, they will pass a clear dominant gene to their offspring (grandpups) so no matter what the status of the other parent, grandpups will never be affected by these conditions. I'm one of a very small number of breeders of ESS field trial lines who does test and publish the results - only about 4 of us in the UK. Doing the tests cost in the order of £1500 for the pair, including travel expenses, vet charges and test fees - but money well spent so far as I am concerned. If you want further info on the conditions my website is Sgurr - English Springer Spaniels - Welcome and the English Springer Spaniel Club has the authoritative info. www.englishspringer.org.uk Sgurr |

Re: Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
No lucky is not from health tested parents, he was the result of an accidental mating. I read that patterdales don't have any hereditary conditions, however if anyone knows differently I would appreciate you letting me know.
After everything i've learned in the past few years and also on here i wouldn't buy a dog that wasn't from health tested parents, unless it was a rescue. |

Re: Is Your Dog From Health Tested Parents?
