Exactly and do the general joe public know the difference betwwen the 2 ......nope

And the breeders who register with the DLRC will come up with some cock and bull story why they are and the new owners will be none the wiser

Perhaps they ought to look at doing something with the number of times a dog can stud out too there are some very 'busy' boys out there !!
Some of the breeds have lower numbers and specified periods between each litter (together with higher minimum and lower maximum ages) under the Accredited Breeder scheme.

The KC have to (I guess) have some form of generic rule to cover all - so definitely a step in the right direction, and if this is re-enforced by additional guidelines for ABS members - then it all suggests that things may be moving towards a two tier registration system. (All we have to do now is get rid of any bad blood in the ABS )

With the right marketing the KC could really become something breeders and owners aspire to be part of, something to be proud of belonging to, setting the standards. They have it within their power! the 'industry' needs an exemplar, a benchmark.

Re: Limit of litters for bitches

Slowly, but surely steps in the right direction. Educating the public is the best step forward from here imho. The general public are starting to become more and more interested in the potential health and longevity of any puppy they may be buying. It would be nice if the UK had a law similar to the one in Canada where any puppy being sold as "pedigree" or "purebred" had to come with Canadian Kennel Club registration papers. It would also be pretty nifty if there were some sort of exam/yearly-inspection/licensing for ALL breeders of any animal in the UK. I also think false registries such as the DLRC should be made illegal.

OK, I'm going to show a bit of ignorance here but what is a two tier registration system and why is it relevant to my previous post.

I've heard that some breeders have done this but can't for the life of me think why. I'd not heard of DLRC til recently and then today whilst I was browsing through some puppy ads I noticed another one, think it was PPRC ??

It was just in reference to your comment about ideally having a lower number of maximum litters and the fact that some breeds already do under the ABS.

====================

I didn't even notice your comment about stud dogs - however - I give a resounding no to this for a number of reasons - firstly, it would be completely unworkable- and as a litter is not born for 9 weeks after mating - it could complicate things massively.

Secondly, such a restriction could have very negative effect on the gene pool and the quality of progeny produced as a result.

Popular sires can in some breeds give as much to gene pool diversification as it could to potentially making it smaller - because quality outputs from a dog can see more outcrossing as people move to use them and then go back to their own lines.

I am sure there may be a very small handful of breeds where it might help - but to work such a system would undoubtedly, quite possibly more than anything - lead to an increase in unregistered pups
