Repeat Matings?

Do you think repeat matings are unethical? Would you do a repeat matings under specific circumstances? What are they?

This is something I have always taken for granted, but was brought up on another forum recently and I realised there are quite differing views on it. (I am so tunnel visioned! D)

Why would a repeat mating be unethical?

Depends on what the first litter produced,
I know in our breed it was done and both matings produced (two different litters)CH bitches and another with two tickets....

They say you never get the same quality etc with repeat matings but my theory went out of the window when a friend told me about the above, the bitch who was mated was bred by a friend of ours.

Re: Repeat Matings?

I have done a repeat mating with my bitch and stud dog. Why? The only other stud I can trace that is as well bred as mine and health-checked to a similar standard is in Devon, 700 miles away. The bitch will come on heat (most likely) first week in January and that's not a great time to travel the length of the country, especially as we have stock that need winter feeding. There are about 15 000 ESS pups registered with the KC each year and an estimated similar amount not registered. I don't think that my doing a repeat mating with those sorts of numbers will have any detrimental impact on the gene pool, especially as my pair are producing pups that are genetically clear both genes for three serious conditions that affect ESS - Fuco, PRA cord 1 and PFK. And their grandpups will never suffer from these conditions either (they will be at least clear one gene and the clear is dominant)

I can appreciate that if in a breed the gene pool is severly limited, repeat matings could have a small adverse effect (especially if the dogs were not health checked). But surely the way to tackle that situation is by importing of suitable semen from lines outside the UK or by permitted outcrosses under KC Regs.

Re: Repeat Matings?

It would depend what the first mating produced

Re: Repeat Matings?

I did repeat mating with my whippets. The reason was because the pups from the first mating had done really well in the ring. One regulary beats his dad in the ring. The seccond is because I didn't keep a pup out of the litter and I wanted a dog pup from this mating as both my stud dogs are nearly veterans so I wanted a youngester to show. If anything at the moment as they are only 4 months old I would say these pups are better than the previous litter. They are old enough to go into the ring in october so we'll see then
