Question What Age Should i Breed my dogs

I have 2 jack russells and i was wondering when i should breed them with each other, my bitch is nearly 2 years old and i have just gotten a puppy-dog who is now 8 weeks old, i know its early i just want to get as much information on breeding before i really consider doing it.

I think the first question is why should you breed them (either together or to other dogs)?

What is your aim in breeding?

Re: What Age Should i Breed my dogs

There are some useful stickys on here about considering breeding from your dogs, one deals with the stud one the bitch. Thats probably a good place to start then ask questions from there.

Really you would want your boy to be fully mature to ensure he was of sound health and temperament. Opinions differ on this and can depend on the breed of dog.

Just found this place while i was looking to see if JRTs needed any health checks, it is worth checking out and this story is worth reading as often people don't consider the prospects of something going wrong and losing their beloved pet

I have not read it but i do know like other small dogs that if you dont get the right stud for your bitch and the puppies are bigger then expected you can loose the puppies or worse your bitch, but i have considered that risk and have read about it , nd i realy want to breed her , if it means not with my other dog i am willing to pay a few hundred for a minature dog stud

If you don't want any dogs - then don't breed?

It doesn't make sense unless you just want to go through it for the experience. If that's the case, then I would say strongly, don't breed. It is a huge effort and not inconsiderable risk to your poor bitch, not to mention expense, just to satisfy your curiosity and desire to breed. Poor girl.

Re: What Age Should i Breed my dogs

Please dont.

Wanted to breed from her before you get her fixed isnt a good enough reason, dogs dont want what they have never had. Having a litter from your girl could do more harm than good.

You also need to look at the breed itself...there are a great deal of JR's in rescues and advertised on the internet. Do you want to be adding to it because you wanted to give your girl a litter before getting her fixed?

There are many risks involved and costs too. It would be much better for your girl if you just let her get spayed without mating.

there are three familys that want a pup for working purposes, and 2 that want a family pet, that have all asked if i am breeding her, my sister bought Sky sister called suzie she has was a calm dog now she is wild and bites people and they took her to a specialists and they said it was because she didnt have a little and it affected her, i know this is rare but i would rather her have a littler, there arnt that many risks i have already read up on them, then turn out evil and bite my son and end up being put to sleep ,
