Hi there.. So if you have read about the risks and you aren't trying to improve the breed or carry well bred working show lines on why oh why would you want to breed...

Please take a look at this part of the forum.. and please please have a good read of how long these poor dogs are sat in Kennels and foster homes awaiting a forever home.. and also please note how many terriers are on there..

Dog Rescue and Adoption - Pet Forums Community

And these are the terriers on the first page... All looking for forever homes
Molly, 1 year old female Jack Russell

Reg, Jack Russell, rough tricolor coated, DOB 02.09

Bailey, Jack Russell, wirehaired non-moult, DOB 10.08

Cracker, Parsons Jack Russell, 1 year old

Our Dynamic Duo, Collie & JRT pair, Callie & Rocky

Scally(wag), Patterdale, 2 years old

Please also take note I am sat here looking after two foster puppies who had issues in there home and these also will go onto that list when they are old enough!

The OP states a lot of the common beliefs and attitudes toward breeding dogs.

I have a male and female so I want pups
I do not want to keep any dogs for myself.
I have friends/family/acquaintances who want pups
I have no idea of the health status
Having a litter will sort out temperament problems.
There is already a temperament problem ie the sisters dog but that has nothing to do with my dog.
Everyone is "so down" and against breeding, but I know better.

Please Skymax listen to what the forum will tell you, it will save you a lot of expense, heart ache, trouble and worry and at the same time you will being doing your bit for the dreadful rescue situation that is a problem up and down the country at the moment.
Breeding is not that enjoyable, it is only enjoyable for those who have different agendas, ie money, showing or some strange urge to continue breeding and put themselves through the torment time after time.
You need to be very hard emotionally to do it, you also need to be aware that you may lose your bitch as that can and does happen. I realise you have read this but really think what that means, you are the one that put her life at risk in the first place by getting her pregnant, so it is really your fault if she dies in the attempt of producing pups for you.
For most, breeding is highly stressful, heart breaking, worrying and at the end of it all even if it does go well, you have the loss of those gorgeous cute pups when they wander off to new homes leaving you well behind.

I agree - and don't think this is a windup, just one of many who think along these lines and are responsible for breeding the vast majority of dogs that end up in rescue.

Tapir,
Skymax hasn't actually been rude yet and as far as I know hasn't p*ssed off either.
He /she has some beliefs that perhaps need explored more thoroughly and corrected but it is hardly time to put on the "attacking" gear yet.

Re: What Age Should i Breed my dogs

Hi Skymax, me again

I didn't tell you not to breed, it's a shame you didn't read that link i sent as it's not just about puppy size, people lose bitches during whelp for lots of reasons and when someone who has a much loved pet comes on and asks about having a litter i always like to really highlight that risk, as you said this isn't a business venture and i am sure to lose her for such an unnecessary reason would, i imagine, be devastating.

The link i posted also had some other really good info on as it is a JRT specific site.

The whole thing about letting them have a litter honestly is BS so please don't do it for that reason.

People on this forum will always question people coming on asking about breeding, it's not a simple Q&A session there is plenty of info out there on that but if people want knowledge beyong reading books then those on here that have it like to think they are supporting someone who has the dogs and the breeds as a wholes best interests at heart I think thats fair enough really given the state of the rescue situation in this country and the countless puppy farmers exploiting the dogs in their care and the general public so please don't take offence

I've never heard anything so ludicrous in my life - a bitch DOES NOT turn aggressive because she hasn't had a litter - I've got three entire bitches here that have not been bred from - imagine if she had turned aggressive on her pups and killed them? or not left the owners anywhere near the pups - what distress for the family then?

Who in gods name put's these thoughts into so called experts heads or is it again just down to interpretation - e.g. - asking if she has had a litter and the owners believing there is some significance to the question

===============================

There ARE risks with breeding - from damage to your dog and bitch during the mating - to losing the bitch and / or puppies during whelping - how much more of a risk do you want?

If you were breeding to improve your bitch (and at 8 weeks you have NO idea whether the dog will improve your bitch).

A bitch does NOT need a litter - that's not saying someone shouldn't breed if they do things correctly - however, 'wanting the experience' - what 8 weeks of being skint, being unable to leave the house, chapped hands, no sleep and a house stinking of poo and wee - assuming your bitch comes through it of course - yep - some experience that I would imagine both you and your bitch could do without.

Re: What Age Should i Breed my dogs

When I was a kid I often heard aunts and uncles say "they should have at least one litter, it's the making of a bitch!" Now at 54 years of age i'm gobsmacked that that old wives tale still exists!

This could not have been said by a professional at all, none would say that. More like an old farmer in his 80's, who see's a dog like any other livestock on the farm!
