Potential puppy buyer - or not?

I have a neighbour who wants to go on my waiting list.
Ever since Stella was a pup, she has said she'd like a pup if she was ever bred. Now, 2 1/2 yrs later, she has asked again. We are not close in and out of each other's homes sort of friends, but always talk, and help each other out.

She's a good neighbour, a nice person, and an animal lover, she's had cats since I've known her, and misses the dog she used to have, who died of old age years ago.

BUT, every time she has handled one of my animals, they've either squealed, or tried to avoid her, even my cat has spat at her. I just don't get it!! She looks after her cats well and they are happy healthy old girls. Mine just don't like her! So, I've always thought 'd never let her have a pup of mine.

Then today, I got thinking, she is only a couple of doors away, so I would always see pupster, we could walk together sometimes, and I would dog-sit whenever she went away. I know her lifestyle, her household, her holiday/work habits, her family, and she would always come to me for advice etc. So there would be an upside.

SO... am I being too picky for thinking no? Or too selfish thinking yes?

Just curious to hear your thoughts on this....I still think no but am I being unfair? And anyway, she may not be prepared to pay what I'll be asking so it may be hypothetical anyway.
Thanks!

Re: Potential puppy buyer - or not?

What is Stella like with her? If mum didn't like a person around her/her pups then I'd be really unsure about letting them have one because maybe the dog can sense something. Also do the animals wriggle to get away when they scream? Maybe they are wriggling too much so she is trying to control them but ends up hurting them instead. I know a friends pup is like this with me. She gets so excited when I pick her up she ends up hurting herself sometimes. When I put her down she still wants back up right enough

Not sure how I'd feel about having a pup from a neighour. She could start pushing you out if she feels you are too involved. I know I'd feel asif I was being watched all the time.

Re: Potential puppy buyer - or not?

I couldnt do that...For many reasons.

For me friends and family are a no go area if you are going to be in regular contact as you will take over...trust me on this one.

I couldnt sit back and watch someone who had one of my puppies do something I didnt agree with. At least If you are not close you dont have to know.

I mean could you let her train it the way she wanted in her own methods even if her methods are not what you would do? Could you let her not get it neutered/spayed even though you know thats what should be done?

Are your puppies endorsed? If not.....could you watch her possibly breed it to a mate that you didnt think was a good example of the breed?

Or worse....cross breed it? (Sounds daft but some people do that you know?, buy a puppy then decide its such a good dog they want a litter from it).

Also I trust my animals insticts if my animals dont like someone then usually they are right.

Does mummy dog like her?

Re: Potential puppy buyer - or not?

It's like she doesn't want to be held by her - she squeaks straight away! Same with the cats, if she comes to my house and strokes the cats they hiss! My animals aren't usually so anti-social!

I don't see her that often, although she's 2 doors away hers is on the next street, so we tend to speak when we run into each other unless one of us needs a favour.

That's probably right that I'd get upset if I saw something I didn't like - worse than if I din't see them at all

I don't understand this statement, Surely its better to know thats something going on that you dont like/agree with than not? - mind any good breeder would keep in contact with all pups down the road or 3 hours away, so would have an idea of whats going on.

Im not sure I understand the reasons you dont want this person to have a pup, is it just the fact that your pets have squealed when picked up or are there other factors?

Yes, pups will be endorsed, and she knows how important Stella's health testing has been to me before I've considered breeding her. Can't say she likes her really, they all seem to avoid her.

I'm not sure either... it's a gut feeling I suppose. She is a nice enough person, but there is something stopping me from being overly friendly with her, it's probably an extension of that. Plus I feel that she's a bit rough or awkward with them, which is why they are uncomfortable, and she shouldn't be, having animals herself.
On the other hand, she may just be overenthusiastic! I do overthink things but that is me!

Go with gut instinct..If you are not sure it would be a 5 star home - dont risk it.

I think its more to do with you always hope the owners you have picked are the best for your dog. And if they are not and you see that everyday, there really is nothnig you can do. After all once someone pays for a puppy its theirs to do basicly anything with.

So people would rather not see it and put it to the back of their minds? Ethical that is!
