Shocked.....are some vets really that....thick?

The other day I took Alaska to a vet I had used before but it isnt my usual vet as I have moved since but off I went under the impression that I would be seeing the vet I had seen there before who was FANTASTIC.

Got there and as you know I have had problems with Alaska, since her season her nipples are still larger than usual and blue around the base. I doubt she has been caught but these are things I have to take into consideration.

Anyway, the vet checked her over and said that she didnt know if she could be caught or not which is fair enough. But we discussed trying to find out what was going on ranging from scan's to mismate, first the vet didnt know what a mismate was and had to go and ask at the desk. Then told me that IF she was caught and I had the mismate alaska would 90% likely get a infection that would lead to her being spayed.....which cant be right because I know plenty of bitchs that had the mismate and didnt get infections and then have to be spayed.

Then told me that I should get her spayed anyway because she didnt like the vet, which is weird because I took Alaska to the vet the other week for her hip scores and the vets said she was fantastic...then again this new vet stuck a muzzle on her and flipped her upside down and seemed over all scared of Alaska.

Alaska seemed a little worried but she stayed focus'ed on me the whole time and was even licking the vet through the muzzle.

I got home and rang the vet I did the hip scores at and asked if she had been off with them and they said she was the best dog they had in all day and was friendly.

So Monday I am off to a vet 30 miles away (the hip score vet) to get this sorted properly seen as I trust them with Alaska and Alaska obviously likes htem.

Sounds to me the vet didnt have a clue. I think your doing the right thing seeking the oppinion of another vet especially as its one whose seen Alaska and you trust and so does she. I would do the same I wouldnt have any faith in the one you saw.

Pregnancy Termination for Undesired Matings in Dogs

You have to consider this carefully as with any treatment there can be side effects. I would get a pregnancy confirmed first before agreeing to any treatment. Make sure the vet is aware she is a breeding dog.
Pyometra can be a side effect of prostaglandin administration which perhaps the vet was referring to, and has to be considered as Alaska is a potential breeding dog. Pyometra can necessitate spaying

With any breeding dog, fertility is very important and needs to be protected at all costs.
"Getting caught" should not be an option as termination of unwanted pregnancies can be devastating for future breeding.

If she is pregnant, you may have to consider which is safest for her and best for your breeding plans, letting her have pups or going along with termination, the vet should advise you on that.

Yes, a friends brood bitch got caught and she had to be neutered as a result of the treatment - truly devastating for her

I only ever see the vet I usually see - always make an appointment to see him. If it was an emergency then it can't be helped but my dogs know my vet so I always go to him when possible.

I am not even sure she has been caught, I made sure from the day she started bleeding that her and Kai where never together, they have not even seen eachother. But I cant be 100% sure I caught her on her first day of bleeding as I usually check her everyday but I had a family problem and didnt check her for 2 days before I noticed her bleeding but from that day on they where apart. Even before then they have NEVER been alone together....ever.

I am going to make sure she is pregnant before giving any drugs to her. Shes my baby and my family member before breeding bitch.

For me she is to young to have a litter but if having a litter is less risky than the risks of mismate then I may not have another option.

I am partly confused because all this could be a false pregnancy or just alaska growing up....I guess I will know on Monday because thats when I am having her scanned.

I will stop at no costs to ensure Alaska is safe, after all I can always get another breeding bitch, I will never beable to get another Alaska.
