Stud fees

Just curious and following on from another thread.

If you used your boy at stud but the bitch only had one or two pups would you still charge a stud fee?

I have seen so many ads that say free return if the bitch hasnt taken but what if it is a small litter?

Thoughts please

Re: Stud fees

Difficult one. As far as I am led to believe (and some correct me if I'm wrong) it is the bitch that determines how many pups, not the stud

If the bitch whelped, then the stud provided what he was paid for. But I can see the other point, just don't know the answer

Re: Stud fees

I think one or two puppies I would offer a repeat mating or waive the stud fee. It depends on the breed though some normally have 1 or 2 but a large breed I certainly would0

Yes you are right it is the bitch that determines the litter size

Re: Stud fees

In some breeds like my breed they only have small litters (1 to 3 being the average)

So no i would still want the stud fee

As the stud fee would be charged at the time a mating was successful (assuming there was no fee or POL agreement in place) - then yes, for a singleton pup, I would probably offer a free mating, as I would if the bitch didn't catch.

Re: Stud fees

Mins don't always have huge litters anyway. Blu was from a litter of 4 but 1 died. Problay if there was 3+ I'd want the full fee otherwise I may just half the price of it. I know of a bitch who had 1 pup and the stud owner gave a free mating a year later and then she only had 2 pups. Maybe some bitches will just never have a big litter.
