Is it fair..........

..........that people in certain breeds should also judge them?

This was brought up on another forum and some thought that a judge who also breeds the same breed would have friends that could sway them to awarding the dog places, not because of the dog but because of who they know.

If a Crufts judge can judge various breeds why can't a breeder from another breed be trained to judge a breed other than their own?

What do you think?

I am qualified to judge all the spaniels, yet i've never owned or shown one in my life You can qualify to judge any breeds that interest you as long as you meet the breed club criteria for going on their judging lists

Re: Is it fair..........

I know where youre coming from as there are certain judges mum wont go under in her breed as its the wrong end of lead the judge looks at but there are alot of judges now who judge various breeds not their own.
There are quite a few over sea judges now also which i think is better too

Re: Is it fair..........

there are breed specialists and all rounders....but you get to know which judges are fair and not facey so pick and choose your shows based on that.

Agree with this, we now pick n choose, if we find em facey we won't give them another entry, we r gona travel further next year and do some champ shows we haven't done b4 down South, judging lists r out so we will b sititng down with breeder 2 discuss wot we will b doing

Yes, there is a definite place for breed specialists.

People also have friends judging outside of their breed who can be facey.

Crufts judges may or may not judge multiple breeds. They are the same people judging at all other levels so are not a distinction.

I only judge one breed and it's my own.

Re: Is it fair..........

We've only been showing seriously for just under 2 years and so far each judge is new for us. There will be a judge next year that we've been under before and one of the boys did well, the other got binned so we'll know which one to take next time and will try one of the others too.

As for breeders who judge their own breed, well it's hard to say really as we've heard that some are facey but we've not found that, then there have been others that we've been told to put our a certain dog under and it's been binned whereas the one we've been told not to take has placed. At the end of the day, I think each one should be given a chance and then go from your own experience not what others tell you... you don't know the real reasons they're telling you not to

Re: Is it fair..........

I see in show results that a particular breed - not saying which - the same ones win time and time again, maybe they are just very good examples of the breed but some of these show folk are very "clicky" so I wonder if that's the reason for it and some judges are friends with breeders too. I do know that some people say they won't show under particular judges because they feel they have preferences to the owners. That's so not fair IMO - but then I don't show so it makes no difference to me. Feel sorry for the ones who do show though!

Re: Is it fair..........

minus the fact that some judges can be bias I think it is good that they judge their own, If the breeder/judge is very experienced then they will know much more about their chosen breed than an allrounder who judges many.

Obv they should all know what to look for but for me I would prefer a GSD breeder/judge than an allrounder if I were to show Akira but thats just personal pref
