Ah i thought it was the dog not liking it,

you really should try, its in both your best interests to have a good idea whats going on leading up t the whelp!

I dont take temps as my dogs dont like it and i dont see the point in stressing them out and im with them all the time so i just watch for little signs

I never take temperatures - but there have been plenty of obvious signs that labour is imminent - increase in panting, inability to settle, off food (rather rare for a lab) and an increase in panting as they work through the first stages being just a few.

If you are not experienced at taking temperatures - you can get false readings from the thermometer against the bowel wall.
