Been asked to STUD!

On the way to school I got stopped by a couple who had two German Shepherds, and they kept asking me if I wanted to stud Duke

I said no offence but he's not even 6 months old, nor is he becoming sexually active (they saw him humping their male gsd) and they said "he is because he's humping look!"

Then they said "You can have pick of the litter AND £500"

I felt so harrassed, I told them he's booked in for a neuteuring next month and that was it then

"That's so irresponsible, he's not old enough! Or big enough, don't you know anything about German Shepherds. You should hold off, mate with my bitch and then get him done, he'll be more mature and at this age he probably won't pull through the anestetic" (sp?)

Needless to say I walked off, what's wrong with people nowadays. I'd never breed a crossbread, nor will I breed a dog whose health history I do not know, or whose parents I don't know, or who I've not had long enough to make that decision. 3 months in my care is NOT long enough to just say "oh hey yeah I'll breed him I know him inside out"

Idiots.

Re: Been asked to STUD!

what a couple of idiots, glad you had the sense to say no as many people would be tempted by the cash!

what breed is duke? my vet won`t neuter large breed dogs until they`re over 12months as it can affect their growth (unless of course there`s an urgent need to do so ie medical or excessive humping)

Re: Been asked to STUD!

He's a GSD cross Husky. It was the RSPCA who organised it becuse they did one of their day thingys. Got him free microchipped, free worming tablets and booked him in for a free neutering. I asked if it'll be okay for him as he'll be 6 months then and they said if the vet wasn't happy she wouldn't have booked him in for them but they'll give him a full once over, and check before the operation anyway.

Gettting my OH To drop him off there, I'm not being the horrible person who sends him to get his nads chopped!

the main thing that would put me off here is it was the RSPCA who said this. i wouldn`t trust them with taking care of my slipper never mind my dog. ring dogs trust, they do a neutering scheme and will advise you better.

With large breeds, early castration often results in an animal with an insufficient breadth of chest for orthopedic health. Seeing the number of giant breeds that I do, I am very aware of the tragic effects of castration on young males. The narrow chests which result are inadequate to support the weight that so many neutered animals, male or female, put on. These dogs then have to develop a 'toe-out' stance, with valgus deformity of the carpus, in an attempt to broaden their base for weight bearing. Once you've seen the harm caused by this practice in person, you quickly change that 'knee-jerk' reaction so often seen, of 'neuter everything that breathes'. If you do choose to castrate your male dog, by all means wait until he is at least one year old for small to medium size breeds, or at least 2 years old for giant breeds.

i just took that from a breeder/vet website. i know that no vet in this area would do a dog as young as 6 months unless there was a real reason to.....well other than the rspca but then i can`t abide by that place even though i volunteer for them

Supposedly neutering them later increases risks of this that and the other too though. I opted for neutering at 10 months old because Rupert was just way too much to handle already at that point and knowing of several female labs in the local vicinity none of which were spayed didn't ease my thoughts either..!

Thing is people say Rupert has a small head and its because I neutered early, but his sire who is entire has a smaller head, not a big square blocky head because he's not from those sorts of lines. None out of his grandma/half sister/mum had square blocky heads either, they are all finer built on the face front and that's what I like GR's to be like

Personally if I had another dog I'd probably hold off as long as I thought feesible like with Rupert, but not for the reasons of preventing him having a big blocky head like joe bloggs in the park thinks, more because it gives their muscles and bones a chance to completely develop. But even so you don't face dire consequences if you neuter earlier, not often

Re: Been asked to STUD!

Some people are just so stupid - he probably doesn't even have an epidermis yet so a mating would be fruitless and as they sound stupid what would they do with the pups homing wise? At the end of the day they would have been your baby's pups and half him, you couldn't trust someone with your "grandchildren" could you?

I had a good breeder ask if she could use Flynn at one year and put off his neutering - no health tests, too young and she didn't even know what he was like temperament wise. Of course I said no as I didn't want my baby to ever know what it was like to mate and he turned out to have severe HD - what a terrible mistake that would have been.

Well done to you for seeing sense and not being swayed by £££'s!

dear heaven! what a nincompoop, with no idea of her dog's health-history or any screening at all?!
how about STDs in dogs, stoopid woman - her bitch could be sterile or chronically ill, or have stillborn pups or miscarry, and all of that is just Brucella - there are others.

good thing Bobby paid no mind; if she is that careless, her dog could be contagious, from prior equally-sloppy
breeding practices. her poor dog - sooner or later, she'll find some dingbat who'll say yes, if she hasn't already.
