Handling puppies.

Are there any guidelines for ths?

Obviously we don't let anyone else hold them. A few people have visited and admired from afar but no touching!

OH and I have to handle them for weighing and moving etc.

But at what point can you start holding them for more than essentials, should we try and get her used to us holding them, she is a bit anxious and has to be there when we do.

Is this normal, shall we just carry on with only touching for essentials and leave it as it is?

Just general experiences appreciated.

I would go with yor instincts. She will tell you with her eyes when she is happy for you to have a hold. Its one of those things you just know when she is happy to share they are all deffierent but this is what I did with Rosie

Re: Handling puppies.

Yeah if you handle the pups near mum so she knows you arent taking them away and then gradually increase contact. The last thing you want is the pups not being used to being handled and having human contact as well as a mum that is unable to seperate from pups. Mum would probably like a little break from the guys too so just stay close to support but take your time. xx

Re: Handling puppies.

depends on how much your bitch trusts you but I handle mine from day one as much as possible and have the whole family handle them too from the youngest to the oldest member so that they are well socialised. Puppy visitors are also great for socialising opportunities but always make sure they have used antibac handgel before handling and wash hands after especially children incase of worms, if they have dogs of their own that they are flea and illness free and if you want you can use a foot wash.

Family come from day 10 and puppy visitors from week 5 prior to that I have a webcam set up and a website with photos so that they can see the pups and mum from day one, so far has worked out lovely.

I don't allow other dogs to visit and my own dogs don't go on their normal walks to avoid bringing back anything that could pass to the pupsters. Its surprising how many people ask if they can bring their own dogs to visit

Re: Handling puppies.

We handled ours from the start, I was weighing them every day and checking that everything was fine, I used to move them around on the teats too just to be sure they were all getting a go on the big full ones down the bottom end.

When they were moving about a bit more I used to bring them out of the pen one at a time for a couple of mins on the rug. I was a bit naughty with Tipsy, when it was all quiet, I did borrow her for a short while now and then... as you can see it wasn't just me lol

That is very true!! If I do hold Celeste's puppies, I will hold the pup right in front of her. I noticed she HAS to have her eyes on the pup I'm holding at all times! She will do fairly well as long as I do not take the pup away from her eye sight!! Sometimes if I hold a pup, she'll get up and check the pup out and lick them. So I usually just pup the pup back as if that's what mom is saying by that.

Thats what I've been doing, She is OK with us holding them but on her terms for now which sounds normal, we'll continue letting her know that we are just helping out
