Re: Shar pei FSF test
No PM yet
PERMISSION TO CROSS POST GRANTED BY AUTHOR DR LINDA TINTLE WHO IS IN PART VALIDATING THE POTENTIAL TEST
Quote:
I am very sorry to tell you that my collaborators have decided that because we have a great many samples from the U.S. that they are not setting up UK and European collection points as originally planned at this time.
These samples were needed to validate the genetic test that we found in the preliminary studies conducted in the past few years. What we are hoping to find now is that the larger studies validate our initial research: that the genetic markers that we identified can be shown to have an association with and prediction for FSF and amyloidosis. This is still very much a research phase but I am more optimistic than I have ever been. There is hope that soon breeders will no longer be breeding "blind" to these disorders.
I have been saying for 20 years that I believed that you can have wide variation in genetic risk even within a single litter. I have not changed my mind on that but this study should help clarify this.
These samples are not for "THE" test. It doesn't exist yet without validation. I am not happy about seeing breeders pilloried for not participating at this juncture. If and when we do have a proven and scientifically valid genetic test and they do not test their breeding stock and puppies, you can get out the tar and feathers IMO. But until then, I would ask you all to try to remain patient and be tolerant. I know your frustration and I share the grief and heartbreak of losing these wonderful dogs.
That said, I am very grateful to the Shar-Pei owners and breeders who did contribute. There are a few who supported this project continuously in ways without which it could never have happened. They did this even knowing that the end result might be a test that decimated a lifetime of careful breeding. Because they love the dogs first. I will always be very grateful to these breeders and look forward to publicly thanking them when we reach our goal.
Again, I am very sorry to disappoint my friends in the Shar-Pei community in Great Britain and Europe. The SPCGB is very dear to my heart and has done much to help get us to this point. I will try to make it up to you. ~ Linda
