Health Testing

I know this subject has been flogged to death but just wanted to ask really - to those that have, breed or are considering breeding do you health test!

And
When you have health tested do you always breed

or

Do you health test and then Not breed

I at the moment am in the bottom bracket here, as I tested but have not breed!

And also!
If you don't test how do you reply to potential buyers when they ask you about healt tests!

Just curious!
DT

I dont breed so dont health test, or should I health test anyway just to make sure all is well?

What do you think DT? Should I or shouldn't I?

Re: Health Testing

I haven't bred, but might in the future IF Kite's hip score is better than average for her breed and she is clear of any testable, inheritable defect. If she fails any of these (she's not quite old enough to hip-score yet) then it'll be off to the vet for a spay.
If she passed these tests, I'd also wait until she proved herself as an agility dog, and had seasons without any problems. Temperament-wise, she already has all the gold stars it's possible to have.

Of course not!
Was just wondering Mrs if anyone health tested then felt they HAD to go ahead with breeding because they had tested! maybe irrespective of the result!!

Re: Health Testing

All dogs we have used have been tested, we breed from what we feel good examples of a breed and that doesnt just include how well they match the breed standard but being sound in health and tempermant to.

If we tested and we had results come back that we were not happy with we would not breed.
we have dogs here that are tested, with good results but havent been used, or planned to just yet although will be used at some point.

what bugs me is people that test their dogs from a young age then feel that just because they have good results they should be bred from regardless if they have gone on to develop a serious breed fault.

Re: Health Testing

I have currently eye and hip tested Alaska who I intend to breed next year HOWEVER I have so far eye tested and at 12mo will be hip scoring Kai who I dont know if I will be breeding I am using a different stud to Alaska until I am sure what to do with Kai.

I think health tests should be done if breeding but I know I would like to health test even if not breeding just so I know.

Re: Health Testing

Anything I breed from is health tested and has its eyes tested annually until it dies, not until it has finished breeding..

If the puppy owners aren't wanting to show/ breed etc, I will pay for hips and elbows to be done so I can keep my eye on the lines I am breeding from as obviously a high scoring pup will affect what dogs are bred from in the future.

If they want to breed from dog they pay for testing before endorsements are lifted.

Re: Health Testing

I haven't bred, but would like to. Stella is 2 1/2, has clear KC/BVA eye & heart certs, (Sept 10) and had her SM/CM MRI on Monday, awaiting results!!

I've NEVER considered breeding without testing! But even if she was Grade A I still may not if I had any doubts at the time. Her temperament is great, and although she has some white mismarks her overall conformation is good. I dont show, but her breeder does and is mentoring me. I've joined the breed club, done my research, and ADORE the breed.
However...I said from when I first had her that the tests would come first, the decision to breed second.

Goes without saying that the stud would have to have the same...

Re: Health Testing

I have health tested all my dogs wether breeding from them or not, and will ONLY breed from a dog/bitch that passes.
