Re: Please help me with choosing a puppy!!!

@Born To Boogie: Thanks for that.
@Swrthy: I didn’t want to offend anyone that keeps the dogs outside. I don’t think anything is wrong with that. I would even keep a horse in the house if I had one.

Like I said, I think is me being a problem here, not trusting people and analysing things too much. Also, I must admit I have never seen a dog breeder with soooo many dogs! I got scared and confused.

I was sure that every good breeder gives their puppies the first set of vaccination and then the new owner takes a puppy to a vet who makes a health check and continues with vaccination needed. This is how it was when I bought my pussycat. I guess I was wrong here as well. This is why I came on here after all. To learn from you guys.

Thanks again to everyone for posting!!!

You didn't offend - all mine live indoors atm - but - we have to be a tad sensible (although that would probably mean no more for now )

I wish more puppy buyers were prepared to look and wait for the right puppy across all breeds.

I chip mine and get them checked with the vet - and advise the puppy buyers to get the pup vet checked within 3 days of taking them home - but I seldom vaccinate.

Until recently, the general advice was not to vaccinate - because vets tend to use different brands and it could mean the need to start again - I did actually have four (including my own) lined up for vaccines from my last litter - unfortunately, we somehow managed to bring KC back from a show and they had to be delayed leaving (which also meant delaying the vaccines).

My preference is not to vaccinate - but I will if this is what the puppy buyer wants.

If you go to a responsible show or working breeder, you will find that some of them will have more dogs again.

If you haven't done so already, if you are looking at show bred dogs, can I suggest you start going to some Champ shows where Samoyeds are scheduled - buy a catalogue (just a few pounds) and go and look at your breeders and their dogs that way - if you can find a breed specific open or champ show - all the better - lots of dogs and breeders in one place

Websites to check for show details

Eyes are not included in the ABS list; some breeders test, some don't. I suppose we have to be guided by what the KC thinks essential
Not many people work their Samis in harness; I would say they are in the minority. If that's what you are specifically looking for, I can give you some names. As I said before, it's not what they were originally used or bred for but they have great enthusiasm for ALL activities. I'm sure the husky people think they are hilarious (in the nicest possible way).
I know there are people who do Cani X.
It takes a brave soul to enter the world of obedience, though I have friends who do agility.
There are some very funny stories about their attitude to work. Never forget part of their "job" was to be companian, soul mate and comfort to people living in one of the harshest environments

I noticed that eye test is recommended but not essential.

You see, in the country I am originally coming from, lots and lots of people work with Samoyeds, doing the jogging, cycling, sledding, skijoring and so on. I guess it depends on the climate of a country the dogs are at. I believe winter time is the best time for a Samoyed dog and the most people I know that own a Samoyed would do most of these sports in the winter. And yes, I am looking to do a lot of sports with my future dog. This is why I love this breed that much, they are just perfect dogs for me. Would love to have more of them in the future..faaaaaar future. We need to send kids to uni first.

Also, I heard on many occasions that Samoyeds are not swimmers, that they prefer just cooling in the water up to their belly. Again, the 3 Samoyeds I know closely are proper divers and not just swimmers. At the end of the day, they used to be trained to do the fishing for their people up in Siberia as well as other things.
But, as we can not count on snowy winter here in the UK, I guess I will have to start with agility, cycling, jogging and roller blading. Ooooooh I can wait!!
And yes, no feelings can compare with coming home exhausted with well exercised dog and have a nice, well deserved cuddle on the sofa. The most fluffy best friend is what I am after.

I would love to get some names Linda.

Where abouts are you? It would be so useful if you could get to the BSC Show. There is such a variation of type and coat size; there's nothing like seeing the dogs in the flesh to help you decide what you really want.
I won't be there, although I'm entered. I have a family Christmas party to go to

I live in Surrey, so quite a journey to get up there. I don’t think I will be able to attend the show.

When I used to go to rallies working my dogs in harness, there was always a team of sammies ther, I will try to find out who they were, they loved to work, but we could always tell when the sammies were on the trails, they barked a lot lol, I love sammies, as I said I had them for 20 years before I got into mals, and I still love to go look at them when they are at the same shows I am at, I have a great fondness for the breed.
