Shih Tzu Breeding??

I have been advised by my vet that it's better to get him castrated, especially as we have other dogs in the family; however I wanted to mate him first and have a mini George to keep within our family.

I'm not quite sure how to go about this as I don't know anyone with another shih Tzu, unfortunately we could not KC register him either as he has a slight eye deficiency (cock eyed) which is partly why we chose him as it makes him even more adorable! So obviously, we need to find someone willing to breed out of love as oppose to cash benefits.

Could anyone advise me on anyone they may know who would be interested or on my next steps.

Many thanks in advance for any help, I will post some photos for you all to see!!!

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

Sorry, if he has an eye fault you shouldn't breed from him.

You won't find any bitch who would use him (except an irresponsible uncaring one) - why would they when there are plenty of good quality healthy studs available and it's the bitch owner that chooses the stud.

Also, I think it's unkind to allow him to mate and then get him done. What he doesn't know he won't miss, but once he has done the deed, it can change his behaviour (and not for the better) and he will be looking for females to mate with, and that can apply even if he is castrated.

Just enjoy him for the lovely pet he is.

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

I'd suggest you follow your vet's very good advice and have him neutered, there's no reason to breed from him, particularly as he has a condition that may be passed on to any resultant pup(s). No reputable breeder would use an animal that wasn't sound and healthy I'm afraid, so you are unlikely to find anyone with a bitch they would let you use from good breeding.

A pup from your dog may well be totally different character wise, breeding isn't cloning; the best way to get a similar dog is to go back to the same breeder, or buy from similar lines. KC registration does matter for pedigrees, any dog makes a good pet, but the less people out there just breeding litters for the sake of it and not registering them, the better.

There is one dog put to sleep every hour in this country, because people are breeding without any real reason, either for the money, or just for sentimental reasons. Rescue organisations are full of animals needing a loving home.

Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, and I'm trying not to come across as sounding hard, just honest, but you really should have your boy neutered and look elsewhere for a pup, perhaps even get in touch with a breed rescue and give a loving home to another shitzu that hasn't had such a good start in life?

PS breeding is a very emotive issue, and unless you're prepared to receive a few blunt emails, I'd remove it from your post, it isn't just the forum members that read threads

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

...dont forget that allowing him to be used may well change his character and very likely will make him wee up everything in the house ! - I'm not buying the reason why he is not KC reg either - the Kc does not refuse registration becaus a dog is imperfect but because it is bred from unregistered dogs ( either bred too young or bred too often etc etc )

Don't breed from him - you will not ever get a carbon copy 'just like him' by doing this - why not hunt down a good breeder and put your name down for a well bred puppy and just enjoy your boy for what he is - that would a whole lot more responsible !

exactly!

why not spend your time having a look round rescue centres for a new wee pal for your family?

then you save an animal from a shelter rather than creating 3 or 4 that may end up in one!

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

Not to crush your idea; but you are looking for one puppy from your dog; and chances are the litter will be a lot larger than that, which would mean you would be bringing more puppies into the world for the sake of having just one out of the litter.

Why don't you have him neutered and if you still feel that you want another companion; get another Shih Tzu from a well credited breeder or rescue centre? I know it's not the same because you want one from your little man, but surely thats better than bringing a litter more of puppies for an addition of one to your family.

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

It is a scheme that is just asking for trouble.
Apart from the cock-eye.
Finding a good healthy bitch will be a problem, finding an owner that you get on with, who will be honest and true and who will let you have George 2 even if he is born, will also be a challenge. An ethical breeder will not let you near her bitches.
Advertising for a bitch may put you in contact with a whole lot of dodgy types who only want a male stud and have no intention of letting you anywhere near the pups, no matter what they say.
Pet owners rarely know the health issues that are behind the dog they have bought and why should they? as they should not be breeding them. So a pet bitch that you find may have a dreadful family history of all sorts which she will pass on to her pups, no matter how healthy she appears in herself.

George 2 apart from being totally unlike George 1, may in fact be hated by George 1. So all that hassle of having an unneutered dog, letting him breed, putting up with the hassle of doggy male hormones and weeing to produce a pup that George 1 will not thank you for.

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

Ditto all the above advice. You really should be getting him castrated and leaving aside the health issues and too many unwanted puppies around that has already been mentioned you will never get a "Mini-Me" from him.

Go by the advice of your vets, enjoy him for what he is and please remove your E.mail address.....there are some strange people who look at these sites

Re: Shih Tzu Breeding??

Thank you for your advice, I'm so glad I posted now, as it's clear to see I am quite new to the whole dog breeding, and the 3 I have (exept George) were all dogs I have taken in from pups, George was the only dog we purchased, I actually didn't think his cock-eye was such a serious issue as it appears to be, and the person we bought it from certainly played it down! (thats how much we know!) But i'll definitely be giving the breeding a miss!! Thanks again
